Why does ChatGPT say “Context window full” or “Chat memory full”?

Learn what “Context window full” and “Chat memory full” mean on the Free plan and what to try if a new chat shows the same notice.

Updated: 20 hours ago

On the Free plan, ChatGPT can show either notice when a conversation fills up. Your messages and ChatGPT’s replies both take up space, so a few long exchanges can fill a chat. Sometimes the notice appears as soon as you reopen a chat, even if you didn’t see a warning earlier. Deleting saved memories won’t make more room in the chat.

How do I keep chatting?

You can start a new chat right away for free. If the notice offers to start one with a summary, you can use it to pick up where you left off. A summary may leave out details. If the original chat is in your history, you can reopen it and copy over anything you still need, such as the paragraph you’re editing.

If the notice offers an upgrade, you can also choose that option to continue in the original chat.

What if a new chat says it’s full?

If you continued with a summary, choose New chat in the sidebar. Send a short message in that separate chat, such as “What’s the capital of France?”

If you already started a separate chat and saw the notice after one or a few short messages, check OpenAI Status. If there’s an incident affecting ChatGPT conversations, try again after it’s resolved. Otherwise, sign in to the same account in a private browser window and try the same short message in a new chat.

If this keeps happening, contact Support, even if it only happens in the app. Include your app or browser version, the time and time zone, about how many messages you sent, and what happened when you tried the browser. If you have a link to a test chat you’re comfortable sharing, include it in your support request. You can keep your original conversation private.
