ChatGPT Temporary Chat may still use information from prior conversations for limited safety and security purposes.

What’s the difference between personalized and non-personalized Temporary Chat?
Temporary chats start non-personalized by default. A personalized temporary chat can use your existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins to tailor its responses. It does not create new memories and will not appear in your chat history unless you save it. A non-personalized temporary chat does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins, and it does not create new memories.
Can a personalized Temporary Chat create new memories?
No. A personalized temporary chat can reference your existing memories, but it will not create or update memories while the chat remains temporary.
Will Temporary Chat follow my custom instructions?
Only personalized temporary chats use your custom instructions. Non-personalized temporary chats do not.
Can I use plugins in a Temporary Chat?
Plugins are available in personalized temporary chats. They are not available in non-personalized temporary chats.
Can I change personalization after starting a Temporary Chat?
No. You choose whether the chat is personalized when you start it. This setting cannot be changed after the conversation begins.
Will my Temporary Chats appear in my history?
Temporary Chats won’t appear in your history unless you choose to save them. ChatGPT won’t create memories from an unsaved Temporary Chat. For safety purposes we may still keep a copy for up to 30 days.
Can I save a Temporary Chat?
Yes. If a temporary conversation becomes useful for the future, you can save it to your chat history. Saving converts it into a regular chat. From that point forward, it follows your account-level personalization and model improvement settings.
What happens if I save a non-personalized Temporary Chat?
The conversation becomes a regular chat and appears in your chat history. It will then follow your account’s personalization settings and your model-improvement preference. For example, if memory is enabled, the saved conversation may be referenced to personalize future responses. Account-level and workspace restrictions still apply.
Will Temporary Chats be used for training?
A Temporary Chat won’t be used to improve our models while it remains temporary. If you save it, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account-level data controls, including your model-improvement preference.
How do I start a Temporary Chat?
To start a Temporary Chat, open a new chat and click the pill-shaped “Temporary” button in the top-right corner of the page. Before the conversation begins, choose whether you want personalized responses.
Do my account or workspace settings apply to Temporary Chat?
Yes. Account-level and workspace restrictions take priority over the personalization choice for an individual temporary chat.
Will GPT builders be able to see what I say with Temporary Chats?
You can have temporary chats with GPTs. If the GPT has actions, data sent to third parties through those actions is subject to the recipient’s privacy policy. That means the recipient may keep that data for longer than 30 days and may use it for other purposes.
Enterprise customers - are Temporary Chats available in the Compliance API?
Yes, Temporary Chats are available by the accessing the Compliance API. Temporary chats will be available in the Compliance API for 30 days regardless if a custom retention period is defined.
