Overview
OpenAI is beginning a limited preview of GPT-5.6 Sol, our flagship and most capable model, alongside GPT-5.6 Terra, a strong lower-cost option, and GPT-5.6 Luna, our fastest and most cost-efficient model.
The GPT-5.6 family advances the frontier on software engineering, computer use, professional knowledge work, scientific research, and cybersecurity.
During the preview, Sol, Terra, and Luna are available through the OpenAI API and Codex to a limited group of trusted partners and organizations. GPT-5.6 is not available in ChatGPT during the preview. We plan to make the family generally available in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API in the coming weeks.
To learn more about GPT-5.6 Sol and the GPT-5.6 model family, see our launch announcement: Previewing GPT-5.6 Sol: a next-generation model .
Availability and access
The preview is not a broad self-service program. Participation is limited to a small group of trusted partners and organizations with an OpenAI account representative. It is not available to individual consumers or through public enrollment. There is no public application or waitlist.
Participation in Trusted Access for Cyber does not by itself provide access to the GPT-5.6 preview.
If your organization receives an invitation, follow the instructions provided. Completing enrollment does not confirm that access is active. Access remains subject to review and may be enabled on a rolling basis.
Access is scoped to the API organizations and Codex workspaces included in each participant's approval. Approval for the API does not automatically include Codex, and approval for Codex does not automatically include the API. Your OpenAI account representative can confirm what is included.
Why is access limited?
As part of our ongoing engagement with the U.S. government, we previewed our plans and the models' capabilities ahead of launch. Working in coordination with the government, we are starting with a limited group of trusted partners and organizations whose participation has been shared with the government before releasing the models more broadly.
This phased release provides more time for additional testing and coordination while we continue improving safety and usability. OpenAI's goal is to expand access and make GPT-5.6 broadly available in the coming weeks.
Applicable terms
Your organization's use of GPT-5.6 during the preview is subject to the terms outlined in its applicable agreement with OpenAI. Contact your OpenAI account representative with questions about terms or a proposed use.
Pricing and prompt caching
GPT-5.6 is priced per 1 million tokens across three model sizes:
| Model | Model ID | Input per 1M tokens | Output per 1M tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | gpt-5.6-sol | $5.00 | $30.00 |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | gpt-5.6-terra | $2.50 | $15.00 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | gpt-5.6-luna | $1.00 | $6.00 |
GPT-5.6 also introduces more predictable prompt caching, including support for explicit cache breakpoints and a 30-minute minimum cache life. For GPT-5.6 and later models, cache writes are billed at 1.25x the model's uncached input rate, while cache reads continue to receive the 90% cached-input discount.
If you previously had alpha access
Previous alpha participation does not by itself guarantee access to the GPT-5.6 preview. Follow the current instructions from your OpenAI account representative to understand your organization's status and any required next steps.
Troubleshooting preview access
If your organization has been granted access but you cannot access GPT-5.6:
Confirm whether your access covers the API, Codex, or both.
Confirm that you are using the approved API organization or Codex workspace and the approved account email.
If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect and try again. Access may be unavailable if your connection appears to originate from an unsupported country or region.
Try again and record the exact error message.
Contact your OpenAI account representative if you are unsure whether access has been approved or enabled.
If access has been confirmed and the issue continues, contact OpenAI Support and include:
Your API organization ID or Codex workspace ID and the affected account email.
Whether the issue occurs in the API, Codex, or both.
The exact error message.
For API issues, the request ID and timestamp.
Requests that take longer or do not return content
GPT-5.6 uses layered safeguards, including model-level protections and real-time checks. Some requests may be blocked or take longer while additional safety checks run, particularly in dual-use areas such as biological and cybersecurity work. These safeguards may occasionally affect legitimate requests. Feedback helps us improve both safety and usability before broader availability.
If a request takes longer or does not return content, additional safety checks may be running. For more information, see: Additional safety checks for biological and cybersecurity requests in API and Codex.
FAQ
Who can participate in the GPT-5.6 preview?
Participation is limited to a small group of trusted partners and organizations. Individual users are not eligible, and there is no public application or waitlist. OpenAI will reach out to your organization if it is eligible to participate.
Does Trusted Access for Cyber make me eligible for the GPT-5.6 preview?
Not by itself. Trusted Access for Cyber and the GPT-5.6 preview are separate programs. Participation in Trusted Access for Cyber does not provide access to the GPT-5.6 preview. If you believe your organization is participating, contact your OpenAI account representative.
Which models and products are included?
The preview includes GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna through the API and Codex, subject to each participant's approval. ChatGPT is not included during the preview.
When will GPT-5.6 be more broadly available?
We plan to make GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna generally available in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API in the coming weeks. We have not announced a general-availability date.
I completed enrollment. When will I receive access?
Access may not be immediate. Completing enrollment does not confirm that access is active, and additional review may be required. Contact your OpenAI account representative with questions about your organization's status.
Can I use GPT-5.6 in a customer-facing product during the preview?
Your organization's permitted use is governed by its applicable agreement with OpenAI. Contact your OpenAI account representative with questions about a proposed use.
How can I share feedback about the GPT-5.6 preview?
Share product feedback with your OpenAI account representative. For a technical issue with confirmed access, contact OpenAI Support.
Why can't I access GPT-5.6 after my organization was approved?
Access may not be active yet or may have been enabled for a different API organization, Codex workspace, or account. Confirm that provisioning is complete and that you are signed in with the approved account.
If the issue continues, contact your OpenAI account representative. If access has been confirmed and you are experiencing a technical error, contact OpenAI Support.
