How does Memory use past conversations?
Updated over a month ago

When “improved memory” is enabled, ChatGPT will be able to reference all past conversations you have had with it — not just your saved memories. This helps ChatGPT give more helpful, contextualized, and better responses.

You are always in control of what ChatGPT knows about you. If you don’t want ChatGPT to recall something you said in the past, you can ask ChatGPT to forget it, which will remove it from being referenced by improved memory. If you would like to have a conversation where ChatGPT doesn’t use or create memories, you can use a Temporary Chat.

You can always delete specific saved memories in Settings and delete or archive past conversations from your conversation history to prevent improved memory from referencing them. After you have deleted or archived a conversation, it may take a few days for it to be removed from ChatGPT’s improved memory.

You can disable both the standard memory feature and the improved memory feature in Settings. Doing so will prevent ChatGPT from using any details it remembers about you in new conversations. Remember, disabling memory or deleting a past conversation does not erase saved memories. If you want to delete information from ChatGPT, make sure to both delete saved memories in Settings and conversations via the conversation history.
