API Organization Verification

Learn how to verify your API organization

Updated: 5 days ago

What is API Organization Verification?

At OpenAI, we take our responsibility seriously to ensure that AI is both broadly accessible and used safely. A small minority of developers misuse the OpenAI API in violation of our usage policies. Organization verification helps prevent unsafe use while continuing to make advanced AI capabilities available to the broader developer community.

Verification only takes a few minutes and does not require any spending thresholds. Once verified, your organization can unlock access to additional model features and capabilities.

How do I begin the verification process?

Go to platform.openai.comSettings > Organization > General, then click Verify Organization.

What do I need in order to get verified?

You’ll need:

  • A valid government-issued ID from a supported country (most are supported)

  • An ID that has not been used to verify another organization in the past 90 days

  • Ensure that the email address associated with your OpenAI account is valid and accessible, as it may be required during the verification process for communication or confirmation.

If verification isn’t currently available to your organization, check back later.

What types of identification are accepted?

To complete verification, your ID must:

  • Be issued by your country’s government

  • Be unexpired and clearly legible

  • Include your full name, date of birth, and a clear, unobstructed portrait photo

  • Be unaltered, uncropped, and undamaged

Accepted ID types include (but are not limited to):

  • Passport

  • Driver’s license or state- or provincial-issued ID card

  • National ID card

  • Residence permit

  • Employment authorization card

We accept original, physical government-issued IDs from over 200 countries; the verification process will guide you through the steps.

What types of identification are not accepted?

  • Expired IDs

  • IDs that are not government-issued (e.g., student IDs, bank cards, company badges)

  • Social Security cards

  • Temporary paper driver’s licenses or state-issued IDs

  • Photocopies, screenshots, electronic replicas, or scans

  • License plates or vehicle registration documents

We don’t currently accept electronic or digital forms of ID (such as mobile driver’s licenses or digital ID cards).

What if my verification wasn’t successful?

If your verification attempt didn’t go through, your organization may not be eligible to access models that require verification.

Verifications can fail for several reasons, including:

  • The ID is expired, blurry, or missing key information

  • The portrait photo is obstructed or doesn’t match your submitted selfie photo

  • The document isn’t government-issued

  • A scan, screenshot, or digital copy was submitted

  • The ID was used to verify another organization within the past 90 days

  • There was a technical issue during submission

  • The information on your ID doesn’t match your account or organization details

  • Your organization does not meet current verification eligibility requirements

At this time, retries are not supported. You can continue using OpenAI’s platform with your existing access.

What should I do if verification isn’t available to me?

If verification isn’t currently available:

  • You can continue using OpenAI’s platform and existing models

  • Some advanced models may eventually become available to all organizations without requiring verification

I completed verification—why am I still seeing “not verified” errors?

It may take up to 30 minutes for your verification status to update. If you're still seeing a "not verified" message:

  • Generate a new API key — this often resolves access issues immediately

  • Refresh your browser or log out and back in

  • Make sure you're viewing the correct organization in your settings

Most issues are resolved by following the steps above. If you're still unable to access models after waiting 30 minutes and trying these steps, you may search our Help Center for more troubleshooting guidance.
