Study mode is currently available to users on all ChatGPT plans globally. Study mode works with any model available in ChatGPT on iOS, Android, and web.
Study mode is a learning experience in ChatGPT designed to help you build a deeper understanding of any topic. When you turn on and engage with study mode, ChatGPT will ask interactive questions to understand your goals and skill level, then work with you to reach the answer step by step.
With study mode enabled, ChatGPT can:
Guide your thinking with Socratic-style questions to help you reason toward answers.
Break concepts into easy-to-follow sections, starting simple and adding complexity as you progress.
Personalize responses based on your past chats if memory is on, using examples and tips tailored to you.
Check your understanding with open-ended prompts and feedback.
Work with your materials by referencing images or PDFs you upload from your course.
How to use study mode
You can enable study mode by typing / and selecting "Study and learn" from the pop-up menu.
For best results, tell ChatGPT what you’re working on, including your level, topic, and any deadlines, and attach helpful context such as class notes, a syllabus, or a photo of the problem. You can also use voice dictation and advanced voice mode to ask questions in study mode. Study mode is especially useful for walking through homework steps, getting ready for an exam, or unpacking a concept from class.
To turn study mode off, open Tools again and deselect Study and learn.
Does study mode work with memory?
Yes, study mode uses memories to provide more personalized guidance if your memory is on.
Make sure memories are turned on to get the full experience. To manage memories in ChatGPT, go to Settings > Personalization > Memory. From there, you can enable or disable the feature at any time.
When memory is on, ChatGPT can remember details like your learning goals and past study sessions to tailor responses over time.
