Overview
Study Mode is a learning experience in ChatGPT that helps you build a deeper understanding of a topic. Instead of only giving a final answer, ChatGPT can ask questions, guide your thinking, explain ideas step by step, and check your understanding as you go.
Availability
Study Mode is available to users on all ChatGPT plans globally. It works with any model available in ChatGPT on web, iOS, and Android.
What Study Mode can do
Study Mode can help when you want to:
Learn a new concept from the beginning
Work through homework or practice problems step by step
Prepare for a quiz, test, or exam
Review class notes, slides, readings, or a syllabus
Create practice questions or flashcard-style review
Understand why an answer is correct or incorrect
Break a large topic into smaller sections
Study Mode is designed to help you learn the material. For graded work, follow the AI-use policies of your school, instructor, or organization.
Guide your thinking
Study Mode can guide you with questions instead of giving the answer right away (a Socratic-style approach). It may ask what you already know, where you got stuck, or what step you would try next.
Explain concepts in layers
Study Mode can start with a simple explanation, then add more detail when you are ready. You can ask it to slow down, use simpler language, give an analogy, or go deeper.
Check your understanding
Study Mode can ask open-ended questions, give feedback on your answers, and help you correct misunderstandings. You can ask it to quiz you one question at a time, wait for your answer, and explain what to review next.
Work with your study materials
You can upload course materials, images, or PDFs, such as:
Class notes
A syllabus
A worksheet
Slides
A textbook excerpt
A photo of a math or science problem
Study Mode can reference the materials you upload while helping you study. If ChatGPT misses something in an image or file, try uploading a clearer version, pasting the relevant text, or telling ChatGPT which page, section, or question to focus on.
Personalize guidance with Memory
If Memory is on, ChatGPT can use saved memories and past chats to personalize Study Mode. For example, it may remember your learning goals, preferred explanation style, or topics you have studied before.
To manage Memory:
Go to Settings > Personalization.
Select Memory.
You can turn Memory on or off there.
Study Mode still works when Memory is off, but responses may be less personalized.
Turn on Study Mode
To start using Study Mode:
Start a new chat or open a main ChatGPT conversation.
Select Tools in the message composer, or type
/.Select Study and learn.
Ask your question or describe what you want to study.
You can also go to https://chatgpt.com/studymode to open ChatGPT with Study Mode selected.
Study Mode is designed for main ChatGPT conversations. If you are in a GPT, Project, or another specialized surface and do not see Study and learn, start a new main ChatGPT conversation or use https://chatgpt.com/studymode.
You may also see learning shortcuts, such as Quizzes, in some accounts or apps. These shortcuts can vary. If you do not see a separate quiz shortcut, you can still use Study Mode and ask ChatGPT to quiz you, create practice questions, or create flashcard-style review.
Turn off Study Mode
To turn Study Mode off, open Tools again and deselect Study and learn.
What to include in your first message
You will usually get better help if you include:
Your level, such as middle school, high school, college, beginner, or advanced
The subject and exact topic you are working on
What you are trying to do, such as solve a problem, study for a test, or understand a reading
What you already understand, even if it is only a little
Any deadline, test date, or format you are preparing for
Any course materials that would help, such as notes, a worksheet, a syllabus, a PDF, or a photo of the problem
Example prompts
Here are a few ways to ask Study Mode for help, depending on what you are learning and how you want to practice.
"I am in my first year of college and taking introductory biology. Help me study for my exam next week on enzymes. Quiz me one question at a time and explain anything I miss."
"I am learning algebra and keep getting stuck on factoring quadratics. Walk me through one example, then give me a similar one to try myself."
"I uploaded my class notes. Help me turn them into a study plan for a test on Friday."
"I know the answer is B, but I do not understand why. Help me reason through the problem without just repeating the answer."
"I have 20 minutes to review this topic. Give me the most important ideas, then test me with a few questions."
Using Study Mode with voice
You can use voice dictation and voice conversations to ask questions in Study Mode when those features are available in your app. This can be useful when you want to talk through a problem, practice explaining a concept out loud, or study away from your keyboard.
Why Study Mode may already be on
A parent or workspace admin may be able to set new main ChatGPT conversations to start in Study Mode.
This default applies only to new main ChatGPT conversations. It does not apply to GPT or Project conversations. If this setting is managed for your account, you may need to ask your parent or workspace admin to change the default.
Limitations
Study Mode can make mistakes. Double-check important information, especially for homework, exams, health, legal, financial, or other high-stakes topics.
Study Mode uses the same ChatGPT plan, model, message, and rate-limit rules that apply outside Study Mode. File and image uploads depend on what is available in your chat and may have their own per-chat or per-workflow limits. Study Mode does not add extra messages, bypass rate limits, or make unavailable models available. If you reach a limit, wait for it to reset or use another available model or tool.
Study Mode is designed to ask questions and work through answers with you, but there may be times when it gives a direct answer. You can ask it to use hints, quizzes, or step-by-step guidance instead.
You can ask Study Mode for diagrams, charts, or visual explanations, but generated images, interactive visuals, and other tools depend on what is available in your chat.
Study Mode does not replace your teacher, tutor, course materials, or academic requirements. Use it as a study aid, and follow any rules that apply to your class, school, or organization.
Troubleshooting Study Mode
I do not see Study and learn
Check Study Mode availability
Make sure you are logged in to the ChatGPT account where you want to use Study Mode.
Start a new main ChatGPT conversation. Study Mode may not appear in GPTs, Projects, or other specialized surfaces.
Select Tools in the message composer, or type
/, and look for Study and learn.Go to https://chatgpt.com/studymode while logged in.
Refresh ChatGPT and check managed settings
If you use ChatGPT on mobile or desktop, update the ChatGPT app, fully close and reopen it, then sign out and back in.
If you use ChatGPT on web, hard refresh the page, clear site data or cookies for chatgpt.com, and try a private or incognito window with browser extensions disabled.
If you use a VPN, proxy, ad blocker, script blocker, or managed network, try disabling it or using another network.
If you use ChatGPT through a workspace account, ask your workspace admin whether Study Mode settings are managed for your account.
If Study Mode still does not appear, contact OpenAI Support and include your plan, device, app version, browser, whether https://chatgpt.com/studymode opens Study Mode for you, whether Tools appears in a new main chat, and a screenshot of what you see.
Study Mode is moving too quickly
Ask it to slow down or adjust the level.
Try saying:
"Explain this like I am new to the topic."
"Pause after each step and ask if I understand."
"Use a simpler example before the real problem."
Study Mode is too basic
Ask it to increase the difficulty.
Try saying:
"I understand the basics. Give me a more advanced explanation."
"Test me with harder questions."
"Explain the edge cases or common traps."
Study Mode is not using my uploaded file correctly
Try one or more of these steps:
Upload a clearer image or PDF
Paste the most important text into the chat
Tell ChatGPT which page, question, or section to use
Ask ChatGPT to summarize what it sees before answering
