Age prediction in ChatGPT

Learn why your account’s age category can change, how teen protections apply, and how to verify your age.

Updated: 4 hours ago

Age verification availability varies by account. On mobile (iOS/Android), there is a temporary issue where Verify age in Settings is displayed even if verification is not available for your account. Seeing this option does not mean you’re eligible to verify your age. The option will be removed for ineligible accounts as the fix rolls out.

To check whether age verification is available for your account, sign in to ChatGPT in a web browser and open age verification. If the verification process with Persona opens, your account is eligible to proceed.

Overview

ChatGPT uses age prediction to help determine whether an account belongs to someone under 18 and should have the extra protections in ChatGPT for Teens.

Age predictions can change over time. If an updated prediction suggests you may be under 18, your account may move into ChatGPT for Teens even if you previously used the experience for adults.

If this happens, your account stays active, and you receive an email and a prompt in ChatGPT to verify your age. If you’re 18 or older, you can verify your age at any time. If verification confirms that you’re 18 or older, ChatGPT removes teen protections.

How age prediction works

To help determine whether an account is eligible for the ChatGPT for Teens experience, ChatGPT uses an age prediction system. It looks at different signals linked to your account. For example, it may look at general topics you talk about, the times of day you use ChatGPT, how and when your account is used, and how long your account has existed.

Age prediction is an extra safety check. It can identify an account as eligible for the ChatGPT for Teens experience even if you already gave your date of birth when you created your account.

OpenAI uses Persona, a third-party service, to verify your age. After you verify, OpenAI will not run age prediction on your account.

Age prediction is not perfect. If you’re 18 or older and think your account’s age category is incorrect, review it in your account settings and follow the verification guidance below.

When your age category changes

Moving into ChatGPT for Teens

An updated age prediction may move your account into ChatGPT for Teens after you previously used the experience for adults.

When your account moves into ChatGPT for Teens this way, teen protections apply and your account stays active. You receive an email and a prompt in ChatGPT to verify your age.

If you’re 18 or older, you can verify your age at any time. If Persona confirms that you’re 18 or older, ChatGPT removes teen protections. This may take a short time to fully apply.

Moving out of ChatGPT for Teens

If ChatGPT determines that you are 18 or older, or if your verified date of birth shows that you have turned 18, your account moves out of the ChatGPT for Teens experience. For more information, see: What changes when a ChatGPT user turns 18.

Review the age category for your account

You can review whether ChatGPT treats your account as belonging to someone under 18 or someone 18 or older. The Age setting shows an age category. It does not let you edit your date of birth.

To review your age category:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Select Account.

  3. Review Age.

The Verify age option isn’t shown in Age for accounts already identified as 18 or older or accounts with an already verified age.

What changes when ChatGPT predicts you may be under 18

If ChatGPT predicts that an account may belong to someone under 18 and the account is eligible, ChatGPT automatically enables the ChatGPT for Teens experience. This can include extra safeguards for sensitive or age-inappropriate content and some feature limits. Your account stays active, and you can still use ChatGPT to learn, create, and ask questions. OpenAI will not show ads in your account.

ChatGPT may use the age associated with your account, a verified age, or age prediction to determine whether your account is eligible for the ChatGPT for Teens experience.

ChatGPT for Teens handles some topics with extra care and may reduce sensitive content, such as:

  • Graphic violence or gore

  • Viral challenges that could push risky or harmful behavior

  • Sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay

  • Content that promotes extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, or body shaming

For more information about this content safeguard, see: Reduce sensitive content in ChatGPT.

If your account is linked to a parent or guardian through parental controls, they may be able to manage selected settings for your account. Parental controls do not give your parent or guardian access to your conversations. For more information, see: Parental controls in ChatGPT.

Verify your age if you are 18 or older

Age prediction does not require you to verify your age to keep using ChatGPT with teen protections.

If an updated age prediction moved your account from the experience for adults into ChatGPT for Teens and you’re 18 or older, you can verify your age at any time.

In other situations, check whether Verify age is available in your account settings.

If ChatGPT shows a separate required age-verification notice, follow the instructions and any deadline shown for your account.

To begin verification, sign in and open the age verification page. You can also use your account settings:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT on the web, iOS, or Android.

  2. Open Settings.

  3. Select Account.

  4. Review Age, then select Verify age.

  5. Follow the steps with Persona.

Persona is a trusted third-party company OpenAI uses to help verify age.

What Persona may ask for

Depending on your country, Persona may ask for one or both of these:

  • Live selfie: Use your phone or webcam to take a real-time photo of your face.

  • Government ID: Upload a photo of a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID. Persona checks your date of birth and that your selfie matches your ID photo. Accepted IDs vary by country.

In Italy, Persona may ask for both a live selfie and a government-issued ID.

After you verify

If Persona confirms that you are 18 or older, ChatGPT will remove teen protections. This change may take a short time to fully apply.

If verification shows that your account should remain in the ChatGPT for Teens experience, ChatGPT may keep or restore teen protections for your account.

OpenAI does not see what you share with Persona. OpenAI only learns the information needed to determine the right experience for your account, such as whether you verified that you are 18 or older and age-related information such as your date of birth. OpenAI does not receive the ID itself.

Privacy and data use

Persona handles age verification and deletes your uploaded ID or selfie within 7 days after verification.

OpenAI does not receive your ID or selfie. OpenAI only receives your date of birth or an age prediction. OpenAI stores this securely and uses it only as described in OpenAI’s Privacy Policy.

If you do not want OpenAI to predict your age and age verification is available in your account settings, you can verify your age with Persona. After you verify, OpenAI will not run age prediction on your account.

If an updated prediction moved your account from the experience for adults into ChatGPT for Teens, you can verify at any time if you’re 18 or older.

You can also control whether your data is used to improve OpenAI’s models using the Improve the model for everyone setting in your ChatGPT account. To learn more, see the Data Controls FAQ.

If you have questions or want to object to how OpenAI uses data for age prediction, email privacy@openai.com.

For Persona verification in Italy, the ID and selfie handling, deletion period, information shared with OpenAI, and age-prediction exemption described above also apply.

FAQ

Why did my account move into ChatGPT for Teens after I used the experience for adults?

Age predictions can change over time. An updated prediction may indicate that you’re under 18 even if your account previously used the experience for adults. Your account stays active, and teen protections apply.

If this happened to your account and you’re 18 or older, you can verify your age at any time. If Persona confirms that you’re 18 or older, ChatGPT removes teen protections; this may take a short time to fully apply.

Why was my account placed in the ChatGPT for Teens experience if I already gave my date of birth?

Age prediction is an extra safety check. It can identify an account as eligible for the ChatGPT for Teens experience even if you already gave your date of birth when you created your account. If you’re 18 or older and think the age category is incorrect, follow the verification guidance above.

What kind of ID do I need?

Persona accepts different government IDs depending on your country. You will see the options during verification.

Common examples include:

  • Passport

  • Driver’s license or state/provincial ID

  • National ID card

  • Residency permit

  • Employment authorization card

Your ID must:

  • Be government-issued

  • Be valid and easy to read

  • Show your full name and date of birth

  • Show a clear photo of your face

What information must be visible on my ID?

The photo of your ID must clearly show your full name, date of birth, and a photo of your face. You do not need to show ID numbers, such as a national ID number or Social Security number. You may cover those before uploading.

What if I do not have a camera for a live selfie?

If your computer does not have a camera, you can use another device. If you cannot take a selfie at all, you can use a government ID.
