Overview
GPT-5.6 Sol is designed for complex work across coding, knowledge work and research, cybersecurity, science, computer use, and design. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro is the highest-capability GPT-5.6 option for difficult tasks and longer-running workflows.
GPT-5.6 Sol and a new reasoning slider are rolling out to eligible paid plans. GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for Free and Go users. GPT-5.6 Sol powers Instant, Medium, High, and Extra High on eligible paid plans, while GPT-5.6 Sol Pro is the Pro option in the GPT-5.6 family. GPT-6 Astra is available as GPT-6 Pro on eligible plans as it rolls out.
How GPT-5.6 works in ChatGPT
On eligible paid plans, ChatGPT can automatically use more reasoning for complex requests while Instant remains selected. To turn automatic reasoning on or off, go to Settings > General and adjust Higher intelligence.
You can also choose a reasoning level directly from the model picker. The options available depend on your plan and, for managed workspaces, your workspace settings.
Choose a speed and reasoning level
On eligible paid plans, use the reasoning slider to choose how much thought GPT-5.6 Sol puts into each response. Available options depend on your plan.
Free and Go users can use Think for harder questions. Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol.
Enterprise customers may continue to see the existing model picker until the new controls reach their workspace.
Instant — Fast responses for everyday questions, powered by GPT-5.6 Sol on eligible paid plans and GPT-5.6 Luna on Free and Go.
Medium — Standard reasoning with GPT-5.6 Sol.
High — Extended reasoning with GPT-5.6 Sol.
Extra High — The highest reasoning effort available with GPT-5.6 Sol.
Pro — Pro models for difficult tasks and longer-running workflows. Available models include GPT-5.6 Sol Pro and, on eligible plans as it rolls out, GPT-6 Pro.
Availability
Availability by ChatGPT plan
The table below shows which GPT-5.6 Sol reasoning options are available by plan. Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna and do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol.
| ChatGPT plan | Medium and High | Extra High | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | Included | Not included | Not included |
| Pro | Included | Included | Included |
| Business | Included | Included | Included |
| Enterprise | Included | Included | Included |
| Free and Go | Not included | Not included | Not included |
Logged-out users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol. Free and Go users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol. Their default model is GPT-5.6 Luna, which also powers Think. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, admins may control which models workspace members can use.
GPT-6 Pro availability
GPT-6 Astra is rolling out in ChatGPT as GPT-6 Pro for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise plans. It is not included with ChatGPT Plus in Chat. Enterprise access also depends on your workspace’s model-access permissions.
GPT-5.6 availability in Work, Codex, and the OpenAI API
GPT-5.6 Luna powers the default ChatGPT experience for Free and Go users as it rolls out. Existing availability in Work and Codex is unchanged. Their availability in other products is shown below.
| Product | GPT-5.6 availability |
|---|---|
| Work in ChatGPT | Sol, Terra, and Luna for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise |
| Codex | Terra for Free and Go; Sol, Terra, and Luna for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise |
| OpenAI API | Sol, Terra, and Luna |
Terra provides a balance of capability, speed, and cost for everyday work. Luna is the fastest and lowest-cost model in the GPT-5.6 family.
GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex
Your Pro plan includes GPT-6 Astra in Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex as it rolls out. Availability can differ between those products during rollout.
Usage and credit rules in Work and Codex are separate from Chat. For those details, see ChatGPT Work and Codex.
GPT-5.6 regional availability
GPT-5.6 does not have a separate country list. ChatGPT access follows the ChatGPT supported countries and territories, and OpenAI API access follows the OpenAI API supported countries and territories.
Eligible users in supported European locations, including the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, and in the UAE can use GPT-5.6 when it is available for their plan and product.
Country availability and inference residency are separate. GPT-5.6 is not currently supported for workloads configured to use UAE inference residency. This does not prevent eligible users located in the UAE from using GPT-5.6 without that residency configuration.
For more information, see Data residency and inference residency for ChatGPT and API data residency.
Usage limits
Usage limits depend on your plan, the model and, for managed workspaces, workspace settings. The sections below explain GPT-5.6 reasoning limits and how GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro allowances work together.
Automatic reasoning does not count toward the usage allowance for manually selected reasoning.
Instant limits
Free and Go users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Separate limits continue to apply to file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools.
Reasoning usage and fallbacks
Manually choosing Medium, High, or Extra High uses GPT-5.6 Sol. If you reach a GPT-5.6 reasoning limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available reasoning model.
If you are on a Go plan, select Think to reason through harder questions. Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol.
ChatGPT displays when an allowance resets when that information is available. You can use another available model or wait until the displayed reset time.
GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro limits
GPT-6 Pro has usage limits. A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model. The limits below apply to Chat; ChatGPT Work and Codex have separate allowances.
| Plan | GPT-6 Pro allowance in Chat | How GPT-5.6 Sol Pro shares the allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Pro $200 | 200 messages per week | Separate 170 messages per day for GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Both models together are also limited to 200 messages per day. |
| Pro $100 | 50 messages per week | One shared allowance of 50 messages per week across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. |
| Business Standard | 15 messages per month | One shared included allowance of 15 messages per month across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. |
| Business Premium | 50 messages per week | One shared included allowance of 50 messages per week across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. |
On Pro $200, when you reach your GPT-6 Pro weekly limit, ChatGPT automatically switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium. To use GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, select GPT-5.6 Sol in the model menu, then choose Pro. This remains available only while your GPT-5.6 Sol Pro daily allowance and combined daily allowance have usage remaining.
On Pro $100, both models draw from one weekly allowance. Switching between them does not provide more messages once that shared allowance is exhausted. Business Standard and Premium also share their included allowance across the two models; switching models does not reset or increase that included allowance.
On a Pro plan, reaching a Pro-model limit does not change your subscription. You can use another available model or wait for the relevant allowance to reset. ChatGPT displays the reset time when that information is available.
Managed workspaces and the ChatGPT Pro plan
For current managed-workspace limits and credit rates, see ChatGPT Business - Models and Limits, ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu - Models and Limits, and the ChatGPT Rate Card.
On the ChatGPT Pro plan, some models have separate usage allowances. When you reach a model's allowance, that model may be temporarily unavailable until the allowance resets. Reaching an allowance does not by itself mean that your account was restricted.
For more information, see About ChatGPT Pro tiers.
Usage must follow the Terms of Use. OpenAI uses safeguards to help prevent misuse, which may occasionally result in a temporary usage restriction. ChatGPT notifies you if this happens.
GPT-5.6 safeguards
GPT-5.6 includes protections trained into the model, along with real-time checks and monitoring. Some higher-risk biological and cybersecurity requests may be refused or require additional checks. These safeguards can occasionally affect legitimate requests.
