GPT-6 is rolling out in Chat to eligible Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business users. If you don’t see GPT-6 in the model menu, it may not be available for your account yet.
GPT‑6 Pro, powered by GPT‑6 Astra, is available in ChatGPT for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise plans. Enterprise access also depends on your workspace’s model-access permissions. Plus plans include GPT‑6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Astra requires Codex CLI version 0.153.0 or newer. If you do not see Astra in Chat, Work, or Codex in the desktop app, open Menu > Check for Updates and install the latest available version. Check manually even if you recently updated through an automatic update notification or the update icon in the sidebar.
Overview
GPT-6 in Chat lets you choose how much ChatGPT thinks. With Intelligent UI, answers can include text, visuals, and interactive elements. Available models and thinking levels depend on your plan and workspace settings.
Other models in ChatGPT
GPT-5.6 Sol is designed for complex work across coding, knowledge work and research, cybersecurity, science, computer use, and design. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro is the highest-capability GPT-5.6 option for difficult tasks and longer-running workflows.
GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for Free and Go users. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro remains the Pro option in the GPT-5.6 family. The GPT-6 rollout does not retire older selectable models.
Choose a thinking level
In the model menu, GPT-6 replaces Latest. Existing Latest selections move to GPT-6 at the same effort; explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selections stay on GPT-5.6. Use the Thinking slider to choose your effort. When GPT-6 is selected, GPT-6 Sol powers Instant, Medium, High, and Extra High; Pro uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra. Available options depend on your plan and workspace settings.
Instant — Fast responses for everyday questions. Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna.
Medium — Standard thinking.
High — Extended thinking.
Extra High — The highest thinking level available with GPT-6 Sol.
Pro — Pro models for difficult tasks and longer-running workflows. Available models include GPT-5.6 Sol Pro and, on eligible plans, GPT-6 Pro.
On Plus and Pro plans, Instant doesn’t automatically switch to a higher thinking level for complex requests. Asking ChatGPT to “think harder” or “think deeply” won’t automatically switch to a different thinking level. ChatGPT can still switch automatically for safety.
Free and Go users can use Think for harder questions. Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol.
Enterprise customers may continue to see the existing model picker until the new controls reach their workspace.
For automatic switching to Thinking in managed workspaces, see: ChatGPT Business models and limits and ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu models and limits.
Intelligent UI
With GPT-6 in Chat, Intelligent UI can combine text, visuals, and interactive elements when useful. Ordinary text answers are still possible, and no special prompt is required. A response may begin while ChatGPT continues thinking, followed by more detail.
These capabilities are rolling out on the web and supported updated apps when you use GPT-6 at Instant through Extra High. They are not available with Pro effort, which remains powered by GPT-6 Astra. Availability depends on your plan and workspace access. Update your mobile app to the latest available version. The older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support these capabilities; use ChatGPT on the web instead.
Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota. Existing model, tool, and plan allowances still apply. Changes to a conversation’s appearance don’t change your other chats.
Reduce visual elements
On ChatGPT on the web, open Settings. Turn off Layout and visuals to reduce visual elements. Some visual elements may still appear; this setting does not switch the entire answer experience to a classic or text-only mode.
Availability
Availability by ChatGPT plan
The table below shows thinking-level eligibility by plan. GPT-6 Sol powers these levels as GPT-6 rolls out to eligible paid users; explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selections remain on GPT-5.6. Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna and do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol.
| ChatGPT plan | Medium and High | Extra High | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | Included | Not included | Not included |
| Pro | Included | Included | Included |
| Business | Included | Included | Included |
| Enterprise | Included | Included | Included |
| Free and Go | Not included | Not included | Not included |
Logged-out users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol. Free and Go users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol. Their default model is GPT-5.6 Luna, which also powers Think. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, admins may control which models workspace members can use.
GPT-6 Pro availability
GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is available in ChatGPT for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise plans. Enterprise access also depends on your workspace’s model-access permissions.
GPT-5.6 availability in Work, Codex, and the OpenAI API
GPT-5.6 Luna powers the default ChatGPT experience for Free and Go users as it rolls out. Existing availability in Work and Codex is unchanged. Their availability in other products is shown below.
| Product | GPT-5.6 availability |
|---|---|
| Work in ChatGPT | Sol, Terra, and Luna for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise |
| Codex | Terra for Free and Go; Sol, Terra, and Luna for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise |
| OpenAI API | Sol, Terra, and Luna |
Terra provides a balance of capability, speed, and cost for everyday work. Luna is the fastest and lowest-cost model in the GPT-5.6 family.
To access GPT‑5.6 in Codex, use one of these minimum versions:
ChatGPT desktop app (Codex mode): 26.707.30751
Codex CLI: 0.144.0
GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex
Your Pro plan includes GPT-6 Astra in Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Plus plans include GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Usage and credit rules in Work and Codex are separate from Chat. For those details, see: ChatGPT Work and Codex.
GPT-6.1 Sol in ChatGPT Work and Codex
GPT-6.1 Sol is a model option for ChatGPT Work and Codex. It is separate from the GPT-6, GPT-5.6, and GPT-6 Pro options described here for Chat.
Enterprise and Edu workspace owners must enable model access. For setup instructions, see: Managing feature access with role-based access control in ChatGPT.
For plan availability and usage details, see: ChatGPT Work and Codex.
GPT-5.6 regional availability
GPT-5.6 does not have a separate country list. ChatGPT access follows the ChatGPT supported countries and territories, and OpenAI API access follows the OpenAI API supported countries and territories.
Eligible users in supported European locations, including the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, and in the UAE can use GPT-5.6 when it is available for their plan and product.
Country availability and inference residency are separate. GPT-5.6 is not currently supported for workloads configured to use UAE inference residency. This does not prevent eligible users located in the UAE from using GPT-5.6 without that residency configuration.
For more information, see: Data residency and inference residency for ChatGPT and API data residency.
Usage limits
Usage limits depend on your plan, the model and, for managed workspaces, workspace settings. The sections below explain Thinking limits and how GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro allowances work together.
Instant limits
Free and Go users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Separate limits continue to apply to file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools.
Thinking usage and fallbacks
Manually choosing Medium, High, or Extra High uses GPT-6 Sol when GPT-6 is selected, or GPT-5.6 Sol when you explicitly select GPT-5.6. If you reach a Thinking limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available model.
If you are on a Go plan, select Think for harder questions. Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol.
ChatGPT displays when an allowance resets when that information is available. You can use another available model or wait until the displayed reset time.
GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro limits
GPT-6 Pro has usage limits. A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model. ChatGPT Work and Codex have separate allowances.
Pro plans with higher usage allowances include higher limits for Pro models.
On Pro $200, when you reach your GPT-6 Pro weekly limit, ChatGPT automatically switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium. To use GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, select GPT-5.6 Sol in the model menu, then choose Pro. This remains available only while your GPT-5.6 Sol Pro daily allowance and combined daily allowance have usage remaining.
On Pro $100, both models draw from one weekly allowance. Switching between them does not provide more messages once that shared allowance is exhausted. Business Standard and Premium also share their included allowance across the two models; switching models does not reset or increase that included allowance.
On a Pro plan, reaching a Pro-model limit does not change your subscription. You can use another available model or wait for the relevant allowance to reset. ChatGPT displays the reset time when that information is available.
Managed workspaces and the ChatGPT Pro plan
For current managed-workspace limits and credit rates, see: ChatGPT Business - Models and Limits, ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu models and limits, and the ChatGPT Rate Card.
On the ChatGPT Pro plan, some models have separate usage allowances. When you reach a model's allowance, that model may be temporarily unavailable until the allowance resets. Reaching an allowance does not by itself mean that your account was restricted.
For more information, see: About ChatGPT Pro tiers.
Usage must follow the Terms of Use. OpenAI uses safeguards to help prevent misuse, which may occasionally result in a temporary usage restriction. ChatGPT notifies you if this happens.
GPT-5.6 safeguards
GPT-5.6 includes protections trained into the model, along with real-time checks and monitoring. Some higher-risk biological and cybersecurity requests may be refused or require additional checks. These safeguards can occasionally affect legitimate requests.
FAQ
Where is the Higher intelligence setting?
On Plus and Pro plans, the Higher intelligence setting isn’t available on ChatGPT web. Use the model picker to choose how much ChatGPT thinks.
In ChatGPT Business, you can find Higher intelligence under Settings > General. This setting controls whether ChatGPT automatically uses additional thinking while Instant is selected.
For more information about automatic thinking in Business, see: ChatGPT Business models and limits.
Why don’t I see GPT-6?
GPT-6 is rolling out to eligible paid accounts. Look for GPT-6 in the model menu; it is not labeled Sol. If it is missing, it may not be available for your account yet. In a managed workspace, your model-access permissions also apply.
Why do I not see GPT-5.6 Sol?
GPT-5.6 Sol remains a separate option in the model menu. Selecting it keeps your conversation on GPT-5.6 and its available thinking levels.
Confirm that GPT-5.6 Sol is included with your plan and that you are signed in to the correct account. If you use a managed workspace, ask an admin whether the model is available for your workspace or role.
Free and Go plans do not include GPT-5.6 Sol. These plans receive GPT-5.6 Luna.
What happens to my existing model selection?
GPT-6 is rolling out as the current default in Chat for eligible Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business users. Existing Latest selections move to GPT-6 at the same effort. Explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selections stay on GPT-5.6, and older selectable models are not being retired by this rollout. Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna.
GPT-6 Sol powers Instant through Extra High where available. Pro effort remains GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra; GPT-5.6 Sol Pro remains available within the GPT-5.6 family.
Can I select GPT-5.6 Terra or GPT-5.6 Luna in ChatGPT?
Terra and Luna are not selectable in standard ChatGPT conversations. Depending on your plan, they are available in Work and Codex. Developers can also use them through the OpenAI API.
Does GPT-5.6 change my ChatGPT usage limits?
Free and Go users have unlimited everyday text chats. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools remain subject to separate limits.
Thinking limits depend on your plan. For managed workspaces, see the plan-specific Models and Limits article or the ChatGPT Rate Card for current limits and credit rates. GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro have the separate or shared Pro-model allowances described above.
Can Support reset my usage limits?
No. OpenAI Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits. If you reach a limit, wait until it resets or use another available option shown in your account.
If you believe your usage was counted incorrectly, or access has not returned after the stated reset time, contact Support so we can investigate.
