Gifting credits in ChatGPT

Learn how eligible customers can buy ChatGPT credits as a gift, share a claim link, and redeem gifted credits to a personal ChatGPT account.

Updated: 7 hours ago

Note: Gifting credits is rolling out gradually and may not be available to your account immediately.

Overview

Gifting credits lets eligible customers make a separate prepaid credit purchase for another person. After checkout, the purchaser receives a one-time claim link to share with the recipient, through email, or by copying the link and sending to the recipient through other channels. The recipient opens the link, signs in to an eligible personal ChatGPT account, and redeems the gift. The credits are then added to that account for use with supported credit-based features available to the recipient’s plan.

Buying a gift does not transfer credits from your existing balance. Existing credit balances remain non-transferable, cannot be resold or gifted, and continue to be governed by the Service Credit Terms.

Terms that apply to gifting credits

By purchasing or redeeming gifted ChatGPT credits, you agree to these terms and OpenAI’s Terms of Use. Purchasers with eligible OpenAI accounts may buy ChatGPT credits as a gift and share a claim link. Anyone with the link and an eligible OpenAI account may redeem the credits, provided the recipient uses a supported personal ChatGPT account with the same billing currency as the gift purchase. Purchasers are responsible for safeguarding and sharing it appropriately. Recipients must sign in to or create an eligible account and redeem the credits within 30 days. A claim link can be used only once. Redeemed credits must be used within 12 months or they expire.

Claim links and gifted credits are not gift cards, prepaid cards, stored-value products, money, or currency; have no cash value; cannot be exchanged for money; and do not confer ownership or personal property rights. Once credits are redeemed, the purchase is final and nonrefundable unless required by law. If a link is not redeemed within 30 days, it expires and the purchaser will be refunded to the original payment method, subject to payment-processing limitations.

OpenAI may require additional verification, investigate or suspend activity, or withhold refunds involving suspected fraud, abuse, chargebacks, or violations of these terms. OpenAI may update these terms by posting a revised version, and continued participation constitutes acceptance.

Availability and eligibility

Gifting and redeeming credit gifts is available to eligible ChatGPT consumer plans in supported launch locations and billing currencies.

  • Who can buy a gift: Eligible ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro customers using a personal account that is active and in good-standing.

  • Who can redeem a gift: Personal consumer ChatGPT accounts, including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro.

  • Unsupported workspaces: ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces cannot buy or receive gifted credits, even if you are using a personal account within the workspace.

  • Where purchases are available: ChatGPT on the web.

Buy credits as a gift

When gifting is available to your account:

  1. Open the gifting credits purchase flow in ChatGPT on the web.

  2. Choose the gift amount.

  3. Optionally add the recipient’s email address and a message.

  4. Review the purchase details and complete checkout.

  5. Choose how you want to deliver the gift - either copy the claim link and share it directly with the intended recipient, or enter their email address for the link to be delivered to the recipient directly.

You are charged when you complete checkout. Gift amounts and purchase limits may vary during the limited rollout.

When you complete checkout, we send a confirmation email to your account email address. The email is the record of your purchase, and also includes the claim link.

Keep the claim link secure

Treat the claim link like a password - anyone who has the complete link may be able to redeem the gift before the intended recipient.

Adding a recipient email address does not reserve the gift for that email address or require the recipient to use it when signing in. Share the link only through a trusted private channel, and do not post it publicly.

Redeem gifted credits

To redeem a gift:

  1. Open the claim link from the purchaser.

  2. Sign in to ChatGPT, or create a personal ChatGPT account.

  3. Make sure you are using the personal account and Personal workspace where you want to receive the credits.

  4. Review the gift details and confirm redemption.

A gift can be redeemed only once. The recipient account must be eligible to receive gifted credits and must use the same currency as the gift purchase.

Business and Enterprise workspaces cannot receive gifted credits. If you are currently viewing one of these workspaces, switch to your Personal consumer account and try the claim link again. Note that gifts cannot be redeemed within your personal workspace within an Enterprise or Business account.

Use gifted credits

After redemption, the credits are added to the recipient’s personal credit balance. They can be used with supported credit-based features available to that account, including ChatGPT Codex when supported by the recipient’s plan.

Your plan’s included usage is used first. After you reach an included limit for a supported feature, eligible usage can draw from your credit balance. For more information, see Using Credits for Flexible Usage in ChatGPT (Free/Go/Plus/Pro).

Redeemed gift credits expire 12 months after the date of redemption. Unused credits do not roll over after they expire.

Unclaimed gifts and refunds

Gift purchases are charged at checkout. If a gift remains unclaimed for 30 days after purchase, it expires and the purchase is refunded to the purchaser’s original payment method. Once the gift has been redeemed, it cannot be claimed by another account.

You can claim your own gift. Simply click on the link, and click Redeem to have the credits added to your account. Note that this does not refund the gift to your original payment method - the credits are added to your account. Credits added this way cannot be refunded.

You cannot manually cancel a generated gift link. If you no longer wish to use a generated link, wait for 30 days for it to expire, or claim the gift credits yourself.

Note that we do not offer refunds for gift purchases, save the automated 30-day unclaimed refund mentioned above unless required by law. We may issue a refund for confirmed unauthorized payments or restore credits in cases of confirmed account compromise.

Troubleshooting

The claim link does not work

The gift may already have been redeemed, may have reached the end of its claim period, or may be temporarily unavailable.

  • Confirm that you opened the complete link.

  • Sign in to the intended personal ChatGPT account.

  • Switch to your personal consumer account if you are currently in a Business or Enterprise workspace - not the personal workspace within that account. A personal account is your own ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus or Pro account, and is not associated with your Business or Enterprise account.

  • Do not forward the claim link or post it publicly while troubleshooting.

If the problem continues, contact OpenAI Support. Do not include the full claim link in your message.

The gift was redeemed to the wrong account

Before confirming redemption, verify the email address and personal account shown in ChatGPT. A claim link can be used only once.

If you believe the gift was redeemed to the wrong account, contact OpenAI Support. Do not share the full claim link. Support’s ability to move or restore redeemed credits may be limited.

The account or currency is not eligible

The recipient must use a supported personal ChatGPT account in the same currency as the gift purchase. Business and Enterprise workspaces are not eligible.

If you have another eligible personal account, sign out and open the claim link again after signing in to that account. OpenAI Support cannot promise that a gift can be converted to another currency.

The purchaser was charged but did not receive a claim link

Check the purchase confirmation page and the purchaser’s email, including spam or junk folders. If the claim link is still missing, contact OpenAI Support with the purchase receipt, purchase date, amount, and currency.

Do not send payment credentials or a full claim link in the support request.

Redeemed credits do not appear

Make sure you are viewing the same personal ChatGPT account that redeemed the gift. Credit availability can also depend on the supported features available to that account.

If the balance still appears incorrect, contact OpenAI Support with the approximate redemption time, and the email address of the recipient account. Do not include the full claim link.

An unclaimed-gift refund is missing

The planned refund is returned to the original payment method after the 30-day claim period. If the claim period has ended and the refund is missing, the purchaser should contact OpenAI Support with the purchase receipt, purchase date, amount, currency, and original payment method. Do not include the full claim link.

Fraud Prevention

We may suspend, cancel, refuse, or investigate any use of gift credits if we reasonably suspect fraud, unauthorized activity, identity theft, abuse or a violation of these terms or our Terms of Use. We may require additional verification from you before permitting you to purchase, receive a refund, or accept a claim link.
