Overview
The ChatGPT Free referral campaign lets selected eligible users invite friends who are new to ChatGPT. When a referred friend creates and verifies a new ChatGPT Free account and sends a first prompt through the shared referral link, the referrer can receive a temporary increase to their ChatGPT Free usage limits.
Each qualifying referral doubles the referrer's ChatGPT Free usage limits for seven days. Referrers can earn up to three rewards, for a maximum of 21 days. The campaign is available only to selected users in India, Indonesia, and Mexico, and not every user will see the offer.
Who can refer a friend
To participate as a referrer, you must:
Use a ChatGPT Free account in India, Indonesia, or Mexico.
Have had your account for at least seven days.
Keep your account in good standing.
Be selected to see the referral offer after reaching a supported ChatGPT usage limit.
Who can accept a referral
The friend you refer must:
Be in the same eligible country as you.
Create a new ChatGPT Free account.
Verify an email address and phone number that are not already associated with a ChatGPT account.
Use your referral link and send a first prompt before the referral code expires.
Keep their account in good standing.
Each friend can use only one referral code.
How referrals work
When you are eligible, ChatGPT may show a referral offer after you reach a supported usage limit.
Copy your referral link and share it with a friend in the same eligible country.
Your friend follows the link, creates and verifies a new ChatGPT Free account, and sends a first prompt before the code expires.
After the referral qualifies, your reward is applied automatically.
Referral rewards
A qualifying referral doubles your ChatGPT Free usage limits for seven days.
You can receive up to three rewards. Each additional reward extends the double-limit period by another seven days; it does not increase the multiplier above 2x. Your total reward period can be up to 21 days.
Referral codes expire 30 days after they are created.
Rewards apply only to ChatGPT Free usage limits. They do not apply to Codex or API usage. Rewards have no cash value and cannot be transferred or sold.
If you upgrade to a paid ChatGPT plan, any active or upcoming referral rewards expire immediately. Downgrading later does not restore expired referral rewards.
Terms & Conditions
This ChatGPT Free referral campaign is available from August 18, 2026 to September 17, 2026 for users on the ChatGPT Free plan in Mexico, India, and Indonesia. To refer a friend, your account must be at least seven days old and in good standing. Your friend must live in the same eligible country as you, create a new ChatGPT Free account using a verified email address and phone number not already associated with an existing account, and send at least one ChatGPT prompt before the referral code expires. Your friend’s account must also be in good standing. Each friend can use only one referral code, and only the referrer associated with that code will receive a reward.
Once your friend completes these steps, you will automatically receive double your ChatGPT Free usage limits for seven days. You can earn a maximum of three rewards during this campaign. Additional rewards extend your double-limit period by seven days each, for a maximum of 21 days in total. In no event will double-limit periods exceed 21 days.
Referral codes expire 30 days after they are issued. Rewards apply only to usage within ChatGPT on the Free plan. They do not apply to any other OpenAI products, including Codex and the API. If you upgrade to a paid ChatGPT plan, any active or upcoming rewards immediately expire and will not be reinstated if you later downgrade.
Self-referrals, multiple-account abuse, or other fraudulent or suspected abusive activity are prohibited and may result in revoked rewards, removal from the campaign, or account suspension or termination in accordance with OpenAI’s Terms of Use.
Referral rewards have no cash or cash-equivalent value and cannot be transferred, sold, exchanged, or redeemed for cash, account credits, or a paid plan. OpenAI may require additional verification, investigate or suspend activity, or withhold temporary increases to ChatGPT Free usage limits involving suspected fraud, abuse, or violations of these terms. OpenAI may update these terms by posting a revised version, and continued participation constitutes acceptance.
Participation in this referral campaign is subject to OpenAI’s Terms of Use and Usage Policies. If these campaign terms conflict with OpenAI’s Terms of Use or Usage Policies, the Terms of Use and Usage Policies will apply.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't I see the referral offer?
The campaign is limited to selected ChatGPT Free users in eligible countries for a limited time only. Meeting the general eligibility requirements does not guarantee that you will see the offer.
Why can't my friend accept my referral?
Your friend must be in the same eligible country, create a new ChatGPT Free account, use a verified email address and phone number not already associated with a ChatGPT account, and send a first prompt before the code expires. A friend can use only one referral code.
Why haven't I received my reward?
Rewards are applied automatically only after the referred friend completes the qualifying steps and both accounts pass the campaign's eligibility checks.
How long do referral codes and rewards last?
A referral code expires 30 days after it is created. Each qualifying reward lasts seven days. Additional qualifying rewards extend the duration by seven days each, up to three rewards and a maximum of 21 days.
Can I use my own referral code?
No. Self-referrals and attempts to earn rewards through multiple accounts are prohibited.
What happens to my reward if I upgrade?
Upgrading to a paid ChatGPT plan immediately ends any active or upcoming referral rewards. Those rewards are not restored if you later downgrade to ChatGPT Free.
