Paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets

Learn how to buy a weekly, immediate, rate limit reset for Codex and Work, and how a purchase affects your usage and next reset date.

Updated: 5 hours ago

Overview

Customers on ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans can buy an instant reset from Usage settings in ChatGPT Desktop before reaching a limit, or from an in-app offer after reaching the weekly limit. A completed purchase immediately restores both 5-hour and weekly usage. It pulls your normal weekly allowance forward rather than adding a separate usage entitlement.

Important: Your new weekly usage period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied, regardless of whether you have any remaining usage. Your next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that first request.

Availability

Buying a reset is available to eligible ChatGPT Plus and Pro personal accounts on ChatGPT web and the Codex desktop app. It is not available on Free, Go, Business, Enterprise, or Edu plans. Availability may vary by account.

How it works

Eligible users have two ways to buy an instant reset. Before completing either purchase, remember that the reset applies immediately, even if you have usage remaining. It does not wait for you to use the rest of your allowance, cannot be saved for later, and changes your weekly reset schedule.

Buy from desktop Usage settings

  1. Open Usage settings in the desktop app.

  2. Select Buy an instant reset beside your usage meter, if the option is available. The option appears after you have used some of your 5-hour or weekly allowance.

  3. Review the price and payment method in checkout, then complete the purchase.

  4. Return to your conversation. The reset applies immediately; your new weekly period begins with your first request in Work or Codex afterward.

Buy from the weekly-limit banner

  1. When you reach your weekly limit, select the in-app reset offer banner, if it appears, to continue to checkout.

  2. Review the price and payment method in checkout, then complete the purchase.

  3. Return to your conversation. The reset applies immediately; your new weekly period begins with your first request in Work or Codex afterward.

Reaching only your 5-hour limit does not trigger this paid-reset banner. You may still be able to buy an instant reset from desktop Usage settings.

Understand a purchased reset

A purchased weekly Work or Codex rate limit reset:

  • Restores weekly Codex usage immediately.

  • Allows you to continue using Codex after checkout succeeds.

  • Sets your next automatic weekly reset to 7 days after your first request in Work or Codex once the reset is applied.

  • Applies immediately and cannot be saved for later.

  • Pulls the normal weekly allowance forward instead of adding a separate usage entitlement.

Billing and refunds

You can see your receipts in settings > Usage & Billing on the desktop app or in settings > Billing on the web.

Generally, we do not offer refunds for weekly limit reset purchases.

FAQ

Why can another account on the same plan buy a reset when I cannot?

Availability varies by account, including your plan and billing country. Being on the same plan does not guarantee the same purchase options. Check that you’re using the personal account whose usage you want to reset.

You do not have to exhaust your weekly allowance to use the desktop settings option, but it is hidden while both your 5-hour and weekly allowances are fully unused. The separate in-app banner is an offer after weekly exhaustion; credits available to continue usage may affect whether that banner appears.

Can I save a reset, schedule it, or use my remaining allowance first?

No. A purchased instant reset applies immediately. It cannot be banked or scheduled for later, and it does not wait for your remaining allowance to run out. If you want to use your remaining allowance first, wait to purchase the reset.

Why did my normal weekly reset date change after purchase?

This is expected. An instant reset restarts your allowance instead of adding separate extra usage while keeping your previous weekly reset date. Your new weekly period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied. The next automatic weekly reset is 7 days after that first request, not necessarily 7 days after payment.

How is an instant reset different from usage credits or a banked reset?

An instant reset restores the applicable usage allowances immediately and starts a new weekly period when you next use Work or Codex. It does not add to your credit balance or give you a banked reset to use later.

Usage credits are a separate pay-as-you-go balance. Your included usage is used first; after you reach plan limits, supported usage draws from that balance. A banked reset is stored on your account for later use and is separate from this immediate purchase.

What should I consider when choosing credits or a reset, and can I get a refund?

Check the options and prices shown for your account, your remaining included usage, and when your next automatic weekly reset is due. A reset applies immediately and changes your weekly schedule. Credits pay for supported usage after your included limits are reached. Compare those differences with how you expect to use Work or Codex.

Generally, we do not offer refunds for weekly limit reset purchases. Usage credits have a separate refund policy: they are non-refundable except where required by law. For details about credits, including how they are used and their refund policy, see: Using Credits for Flexible Usage in ChatGPT (Personal plans).

Why don’t I see a reset banner when only my 5-hour limit is reached?

The paid-reset upsell banner is triggered by an exhausted weekly allowance, not by reaching only the 5-hour limit. Its absence does not mean you cannot buy a reset: if your account is eligible, check for Buy an instant reset in desktop Usage settings.
