ChatGPT for Word opens ChatGPT in a sidebar inside Microsoft Word. You can ask questions about the document you have open, revise selected text, or turn notes into a first draft.

How to install
Install ChatGPT for Word from Microsoft Marketplace:
Open the ChatGPT listing and select Get it now.
Follow the installation steps.
Open Microsoft Word, then open ChatGPT from the ribbon.
Sign in with your ChatGPT account. If you use an organization’s workspace, select that workspace.
Open a document and enter your request in the ChatGPT sidebar.
Workspace admins can turn ChatGPT for Word on or off in the ChatGPT admin console. Microsoft 365 admins must also allow the ChatGPT add-in so it can appear in Word for employees.
Starting October 1, 2026, ChatGPT for Word will be enabled by default.
How to use it well
For a specific edit, select the text in Word and describe what you want changed. Include anything that should stay the same.
For larger changes, ask ChatGPT to suggest an outline or explain its proposed edits before changing the document.
Paste notes or source text into your prompt when you want ChatGPT to draft from that material.

Current limitations
Editing and formatting: Complex formatting, tables, and charts may need manual adjustments.
Other local files: ChatGPT for Word can work with your open document, but it cannot reference other files on your computer. Paste relevant text into your prompt to use it as context.
Accuracy: ChatGPT can make mistakes and change content you intended to keep. Check important facts, figures, citations, and edits before using or sharing a document. Save a copy of important work before making substantial changes.
Using skills and apps
Skills let you reuse instructions for document tasks, such as memo drafting, formatting, and contract review.
Supported apps can bring in information from services such as Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox. Which apps you can use depends on your plan, workspace settings, and permissions for the connected source.
Plugins are not currently supported in ChatGPT for Word.
Pricing and usage
Word uses token-based pricing at the API rates for the model you use. Tokens measure the content the model processes and generates. Usage depends on the model, document size, and work requested, including the input, cached input, and output tokens used.
Your plan’s token limits apply. Word draws from the shared usage allowance for Codex and other premium features on plans that include it. Using Word can reduce the included usage available for those other features.

Privacy and data
Data use follows your ChatGPT plan and data controls. In Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces, inputs and outputs are not used to train OpenAI models by default. Learn more about business data privacy.

Do I need a separate add-in for Word?
No. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint use the same ChatGPT Microsoft add-in.
Why don’t I see ChatGPT in Word?
Your organization may restrict which Microsoft 365 add-ins you can install or use. Check that your administrator has made the ChatGPT add-in available to you.
Why can’t I access my ChatGPT workspace?
Make sure you are signed in with the ChatGPT account associated with that workspace and have selected the workspace you want to use. Your workspace admin can check whether ChatGPT for Word is enabled in the ChatGPT admin console.
Do my ChatGPT conversations, memory, and skills carry over?
No. Conversations in the add-in are separate from your ChatGPT conversation history. ChatGPT memory and skills do not carry over to the add-in.
