Deleting your account is permanent can cannot be undone.
For security reasons, you cannot reuse the same email for a new account. All your data, including profile, conversations, and API usage, will be removed. If you've been using ChatGPT with the API, this access will also be deleted. Account deletion is permanent, so you won't be able to make an account again in the future.
Account Deletion
Option 1: Self-serve
In the bottom left click on Settings
Free
Plus
In the Settings modal click on Data controls
Under Delete account click Delete
Confirmation modal will appear where you need to type your account email + "DELETE" into the input fields to unlock the "Permanently delete my account" button
Once the inputs are filled out you unlock the "Permanently delete my account" button
Click "Permanently delete my account" to delete your account.
Option 2: You can have us delete your account through our help chat when logged into our website:
Select the "Help" button in the bottom right.
Select "Send us a message."
Select "Account Deletion" and complete the workflow for account deletion.
Your request will be submitted to us and you'll receive a confirmation when the deletion has been completed. Please note that it may take up to 4 weeks for your request to be completed.
You must be logged into your OpenAI account (i.e. https://platform.openai.com/login) for this process, as we must confirm that you are the account holder. Requests made without an associated account cannot be processed.
Common issues
Delete a single chat conversation
You can clear specific chat conversations one at a time from your chat history. After 30 days the cleared conversation will be permanently deleted or de-identified if you haven't opted out of having your content used to improve our services. If you need to clear all conversations there is an option to do that:
Data opt-out
ChatGPT
When you use our non-API consumer services ChatGPT or DALL-E, we may use the data you provide us to improve our models. You can switch off training in ChatGPT settings (under Data Controls) to turn off training for any conversations created while training is disabled or you can submit this form. Once you opt out, new conversations will not be used to train our models.
API
OpenAI does not use data submitted to and generated by our API to train OpenAI models or improve OpenAI’s service offering. In order to support the continuous improvement of our models, you can fill out this form to opt-in to share your data with us.
Can I reactivate my account after it's been deleted?
While you can't restore your original account (deleting your account is permanent), you can create a new account with a different email address!
Click “Sign up” on the ChatGPT login page or our API login page. There are a couple caveats of which to be mindful:
Email addresses: You'll need to use a new email address. Since every email address is unique per account, we require a different email address for new accounts. If you don't have an alternative email address, you can try using what's known as an email subaddress: instead of
jane@example.com
, tryjane+alt@example.com
. Emails to this address should still go to the same inbox (everything after the + is typically ignored by your email provider), but we'll treat this as a unique email address.Phone numbers: New accounts are still subject to our limit of 2 active accounts per phone number. Deleted accounts do count toward this limit. Deleting an account does not free up another spot. A phone number can only ever be used up to 2 times for verification.
We don't support unlinking a phone number from an existing account
For anti-fraud and abuse reasons, we do not allow you to unlink phone numbers from existing accounts. The 2 unique OpenAI account limit applies to all active accounts.
How many times can I use my phone number to create OpenAI accounts?
Using a phone number for OpenAI accounts is like a punchcard: it's good for creating only 2 accounts. After that, it can't be used again even if you've deleted either account.
See our Phone Verification FAQ.
