How do I export my ChatGPT history and data?

Privacy Portal

You can obtain a copy of your data and exercise other privacy rights through our Privacy Portal.

If you'd like to get a copy of your data, please ensure you can access the email inbox or phone number associated with your account before you begin, as you'll need to verify ownership:

  1. Go to the Privacy Portal

  2. Click on Make a Privacy Request in the top right corner

  3. Select I have a consumer ChatGPT account

  4. Select Download my data and follow the steps on the screen.

If you'd like to export your data, please ensure you can access the email inbox or phone number associated with your account before you begin, as you'll need to verify ownership:


Note: Chat exports are not available for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise accounts.

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.

  2. In the bottom left corner of the page click on your profile icon.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. Click Data Controls menu.

  5. Under Export Data click Export.

  6. In the confirmation screen click Confirm export.

  7. You should receive an email with your data. Note: The link in the email expires after 24 hours.

  8. Click Download data export to download your data as a zip file. The file includes your chat history as well as other relevant account data.

Troubleshooting: Data exports can take up to 7 days to arrive. If your account has an email address, check your inbox, spam, and promotions folders for an email from OpenAI noreply@tm.openai.com. If your account uses only a phone number, check your SMS messages for the export link. If you already requested an export, wait for the existing request to finish before requesting another one; you may see a message that your export has already been requested while it is still being processed. If the message is missing after 7 days or the download link has expired, submit a new export request or use the Privacy Portal.

This functionality is available on Free, Plus, and Pro plans. It is not available to logged out users.
