OpenAI o3 is our most powerful reasoning model that pushes the frontier across coding, math, science, visual perception, and more. It sets a new SOTA on benchmarks including Codeforces, SWE-bench (without building a custom model-specific scaffold), and MMMU. It’s ideal for complex queries requiring multi-faceted analysis and whose answers may not be immediately obvious. It performs especially strongly at visual tasks like analyzing images, charts, and graphics. In evaluations by external experts, o3 makes 20 percent fewer major errors than OpenAI o1 on difficult, real-world tasks—especially excelling in areas like programming, business/consulting, and creative ideation. Early testers highlighted its analytical rigor as a thought partner and emphasized its ability to generate and critically evaluate novel hypotheses—particularly within biology, math, and engineering contexts.

OpenAI o4-mini is a smaller model optimized for fast, cost-efficient reasoning—it achieves remarkable performance for its size and cost, particularly in math, coding, and visual tasks. It is the best-performing benchmarked model on AIME 2024 and 2025. In expert evaluations, it also outperforms its predecessor, o3‑mini, on non-STEM tasks as well as domains like data science. Thanks to its efficiency, o4-mini supports significantly higher usage limits than o3, making it a strong high-volume, high-throughput option for questions that benefit from reasoning.

We've released a research preview of GPT-4.5—our largest, and best model for chat, yet. GPT-4.5 is a step forward in scaling up pre-training and post-training. By scaling unsupervised learning, GPT-4.5 improves its ability to recognize patterns, draw connections, and generate creative insights without reasoning.

Early testing shows that interacting with GPT-4.5 feels more natural. Its broader knowledge base, improved ability to follow user intent, and greater “EQ” make it useful for tasks like improving writing, programming, and solving practical problems. We also expect it to hallucinate less.

We’re sharing GPT-4.5 as a research preview to better understand its strengths and limitations. We’re still exploring what it’s capable of and are eager to see how people use it in ways we might not have expected.

The OpenAI o1 and o1-mini models are a series of reasoning models for solving hard problems. While GPT-4o is still the best option for most prompts, the o1 series is helpful for handling complex, problem-solving tasks in domains like research, strategy, coding, math, and science.

For most use cases, especially those that involve the use of tools and vision, we recommend using GPT-4o in ChatGPT. Please note the following limitations on the OpenAI o1 and o1-mini models in ChatGPT:

GPT-4o is OpenAI's flagship model that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time. GPT-4o is available in ChatGPT and the API as a text and vision model (ChatGPT will continue to have support for voice via the pre-existing Voice Mode feature) initially. Specifically, GPT-4o is available in ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise, and in the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API.

GPT-4.1 is a specialized model that excels at coding tasks. Compared to GPT-4o, it's even stronger at precise instruction following and web development tasks, and offers an alternative to OpenAI o3 and OpenAI o4-mini for simpler, everyday coding needs.

Plus, Pro, and Team users can access GPT-4.1 via the "more models" dropdown in the model picker. Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the coming weeks. GPT-4.1 has the same rate limits as GPT-4o for paid users.

GPT-4.1 mini is a fast, capable, and efficient small model and excels in instruction-following, coding, and overall intelligence. GPT-4.1 mini is available in the model picker under "more models" for paid users, and will serve as the fallback model for free users once they reach their GPT-4o usage limits.

Users on the Free tier will be defaulted to GPT-4o with a limit on the number of messages they can send using GPT-4o, which will vary based on current usage and demand. When unavailable, Free tier users will be switched back to GPT-4.1 mini.

Free users also receive limited access to messages using advanced tools through 4o, such as:

GPT-4o has advanced vision capabilities, which increases accuracy in understanding images you share.

Free tier users can use GPT-4o only a limited number of times within a five hour window. We’ll notify you once you’ve reached the limit and invite you to continue your conversation using GPT-4.1 mini or to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus / Pro.

Free tier users can upgrade to Plus or Pro at any time by clicking on ChatGPT:

ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers have GPT-4 and GPT-4o access on chatgpt.com with a larger usage cap.

ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users will be able to select GPT-4o from the drop down menu at the top of the page.

As of Feb 1, 2025, Plus users will be able to send up to 80 messages every 3 hours on GPT-4o and up to 40 messages every 3 hours on GPT-4. We may reduce the limit during peak hours to keep GPT-4 and GPT-4o accessible to the widest number of people.

The GPT-4 and GPT-4o message caps for a user in a ChatGPT Team workspace is higher than that of ChatGPT Plus.

The GPT-4 and GPT-4o message caps for a Pro user is virtually unlimited.

Please note that unused messages do not accumulate (i.e. if you wait 6 hours, you will not have 80 messages available to use for the next 3 hours on GPT-4).

The ChatGPT Enterprise plan is designed specifically to meet the needs of large enterprises, with unlimited, high-speed access to GPT-4o and GPT-4.

New conversations on a ChatGPT Enterprise account will default to GPT-4o. ChatGPT Enterprise users will be able to select other models from the drop down menu at the top of the page.
