To comply with legal requirements, users in some locations are required to verify their age before continuing to use the service.

How age verification works

Sign in to ChatGPT and follow the age-verification instructions shown for your account.

In Italy, OpenAI uses Persona for age verification while your account is active. Persona is a third-party company that helps verify your age. The available methods may include a live selfie, a government-issued ID, or both.

If ChatGPT shows a required age-verification notice, follow the instructions and any deadline shown for your account. If you miss a required deadline, your access may be restricted until verification is complete.

After a successful check, you’ll return to ChatGPT. Verification can also help determine whether your account uses the ChatGPT for Teens experience.

Recover an account deactivated for missing age verification

If your account was deactivated because you missed Italy’s required age-verification deadline, try signing in and select Verify your age on the deactivation screen. You can also restart verification through Stripe without signing in or finding the original email.

Use your OpenAI account’s email address, including its Apple private relay address if you use Hide My Email. Once verification has finished processing, try signing in again. Completing this Stripe recovery check restores access without changing the age status used for the ChatGPT for Teens experience. If you are 18 or older and want teen protections removed, you can verify your age with Persona after you regain access. For the steps, see: Age prediction in ChatGPT.

Privacy

For Persona verification, OpenAI does not receive your ID or selfie. OpenAI receives age-related information needed to determine the right experience for your account.

This message can appear if you start age verification but cancel before completing it. Follow the instructions shown to try again.

What does “Unfortunately, your age could not be verified. Please contact support.” mean?

This message can indicate that you have reached the limit of unsuccessful verification attempts. Your account may be restricted, depending on the verification requirement.
