What is Memory?

Updated this week

Please note that “Saved Memories” and “Chat history” are only available to Plus and Pro accounts. Free tier users only have access to “Saved Memories”.

ChatGPT can now remember helpful information between conversations, making its responses more relevant and personalized. Whether you're typing, speaking, or generating images in ChatGPT, it can recall details and preferences you’ve shared and use them to tailor its responses. The more you use it, the more useful it becomes, and you’ll start to notice improvements over time.

You can also teach ChatGPT to remember something new by simply saying it. For example: “Remember that I’m vegetarian when you recommend recipes.” To see what it remembers about you, just ask: “What do you remember about me?” ChatGPT can also use memories to inform search queries when ChatGPT searches the web using third-party search providers. You’re always in control. You can reset memory, delete specific or all saved memories, or turn memory off entirely in your settings. If you want to have a conversation that doesn’t use memory, you can start a Temporary Chat. This won’t reference or update memory.

ChatGPT’s memory works in two ways: saved memories and chat history.

  • Saved memories are details ChatGPT remembers and uses in future conversations, like your name, preferences, or goals. ChatGPT may save important information automatically, but you can also ask it to remember something directly by saying, “Remember this…”

  • Chat history allows ChatGPT to reference past conversations when responding, even if the information hasn’t been saved as a memory. Since it doesn’t retain every detail, use saved memories for anything you want ChatGPT to keep top-of-mind.

You can turn off Saved memory and Chat history reference anytime in Settings using their individual toggles. If you delete or archive a conversation from your chat history, ChatGPT will no longer reference it, unless you’ve already saved a memory from that chat. To fully remove saved memories in bulk or individually, click your profile icon > Settings > Personalization > Manage Memories:

“Saved Memories” and “Chat history” are available to Plus and Pro accounts. Free accounts are limited to “Saved Memories”.
