Core Capabilities
When you start a conversation with ChatGPT, you’re interacting with a powerful generative AI model provided by OpenAI. Customers on a paid plan can choose between several foundational models. Learn more about foundational models.
You can use natural language to ask ChatGPT questions or give ChatGPT tasks. You can obtain better results by using prompt engineering techniques. Learn more about prompt engineering.
In addition to these models, ChatGPT has access to several tools which it can use to complete tasks. ChatGPT chooses which tools to use based on the context of your conversation.
Web Browsing
The language models powering ChatGPT are trained on a significant amount of the world’s information, but they have a knowledge cutoff because their training data is static. As a result, ChatGPT doesn’t know everything about specialized topics and current events. Browse with Bing gives ChatGPT the ability to search the internet for additional information it needs to answer questions and complete tasks. Learn more about Web Browsing.
Image processing
When you upload an image as part of your prompt, ChatGPT uses the GPT Vision model to interpret the image. This enables ChatGPT to answer questions about the image, or use information in the image as context for other prompts. Learn more about image inputs.
Image generation
When you request an image from ChatGPT, it uses a tool called DALL-E to create it. You don't need to worry about crafting the perfect description—just tell ChatGPT what you'd like to see using simple, everyday language, and it will handle the details. Learn more about DALL-E.
You can also ask ChatGPT to change specific parts of an image generated with DALL-E. Learn more about the DALL-E editor.
Text documents
When you upload text documents (Word, PowerPoint, PDF, TXT, etc.), ChatGPT uses tools to extract text and find relevant information. This helps ChatGPT understand the contents of the document, and supports tasks like summarization. Learn more about file uploads.
Advanced Data Analysis
Customers on a paid plan can use Advanced Data Analysis (ADA) to interact with data documents (Excel, CSV, JSON). Using ADA, ChatGPT can answer quantitative questions about your data, fix common data errors, and produce data visualizations. Learn more about Advanced Data Analysis.
Voice
You can interact with ChatGPT by speaking using the ChatGPT mobile app. When using the web version of ChatGPT, you can also have ChatGPT read any of its answers out loud. Learn more about voice chat.
Extended capabilities with GPTs
GPTs are task-specific applications which run on top of ChatGPT. They can be configured to use the tools described above, and can be augmented with access to additional data and services to extend their capabilities.
You can access GPTs created by community builders using the GPT Store. Learn more about the GPT Store.
When you’re ready, you can create your own GPTs using natural language. Learn more about creating GPTs.
When you’re ready, you can publish GPTs to the store so that others can benefit from them. Learn more about publishing GPTs.
