Apple has integrated ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools. This article explains how your data is collected and used when you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations, as well as the controls you have over this data.
You can always use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations without logging into a ChatGPT account, to ask questions, get help writing messages, or analyze an image or document. For additional features, like access to OpenAI’s more powerful AI models, or to save your conversations, you can connect your ChatGPT account to Apple’s integrations. The way your data is processed and stored depends on how you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations and your ChatGPT settings.
Using ChatGPT through Apple without a ChatGPT account
If you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations without logging into a ChatGPT account, your ChatGPT conversations are only processed by OpenAI to provide you with a safe response and comply with applicable laws. OpenAI does not receive your IP address, store your requests, or use them to train AI models.
You can also choose to continue a conversation with ChatGPT that you start through Apple’s integrations in the ChatGPT app or website. When you continue a conversation with ChatGPT in the ChatGPT apps or website, we process your data as described in OpenAI’s Privacy Policy.
Using ChatGPT through Apple with a ChatGPT account
When you connect your ChatGPT account through Apple’s integrations, you can enjoy additional features, such as access to OpenAI’s latest AI models. Connecting your account to Apple’s integrations means that your existing data preferences under OpenAI’s policies apply to your interactions with ChatGPT. If you’re using a business account, your data will continue to be handled in accordance with our enterprise privacy commitments.
OpenAI also makes some basic account info available on your device to connect your account, including your name, email address, and profile image, as well as workspace names and billing plan associated with your account.
Depending on your choices and how you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations, your conversations can also be saved in your ChatGPT account and used to improve OpenAI’s services. For example, if you enable the ChatGPT integration and link your account on your Apple devices, your interactions with ChatGPT will be saved in your account’s chat history so that you can access them later.
You have controls over how your data is stored and used, and can always change these settings in your ChatGPT account. This includes:
You can easily choose whether your conversations with ChatGPT can be used to improve and train our models by toggling the “Improve the model for everyone” setting.
If you enable Temporary Chat in the ChatGPT apps or website, your conversations with ChatGPT will not be saved in your ChatGPT account or used for improving OpenAI’s models.
You can access other settings and data controls, such as to export your conversations from ChatGPT, or delete your ChatGPT account entirely.
