Applications are now open for the Rosalind Academic Plan, which offers complimentary ChatGPT Business seats and access to GPT-Rosalind for approved research labs. This offer is limited to labs at U.S. universities. If you’re a principal investigator (PI) or lab lead, apply on behalf of your lab.
Overview
The Rosalind Academic Plan gives approved academic labs up to 30 complimentary ChatGPT Business Standard seats and access to GPT-Rosalind, enabling lab ChatGPT and Codex use in a shared workspace. You can use these tools to review literature, work with research data, and develop analysis code. For more about Standard seats, see: ChatGPT Business – Overview.
To get started, have a principal investigator (PI) or designated lab lead apply on behalf of the lab. After approval, the PI can manage access for approved members.
For more about GPT-Rosalind, see: GPT-Rosalind for life sciences.
Eligibility
The Rosalind Academic Plan is currently available only to academic labs at U.S. universities. The PI or lab lead must verify their institutional email address and provide information about the institution, lab, and intended research use.
Before applying, check whether your university permits an independent ChatGPT Business workspace or requires you to use an existing institutional agreement. If you’re unsure, contact your university or department administrator or OpenAI account team.
Applications are reviewed for eligibility and responsible use. A university email address or an existing subscription does not guarantee approval. Your lab must meet the academic-offer eligibility requirements and pass trusted-access review before receiving the plan’s benefits.
What’s included
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 Business Standard seats at no cost | After approval, complete the offer setup to receive up to 30 Business Standard seats at no cost for 12 months. A payment card is required during setup. |
| GPT-Rosalind | GPT-Rosalind access following trusted-access approval and activation for eligible members, subject to applicable usage limits. |
| ChatGPT and Codex | Your Standard seat includes ChatGPT and Codex, subject to their usage limits. The complimentary offer does not remove those limits. For general Business model and usage guidance, see: ChatGPT Business models and limits. |
How to apply
If you’re a PI or lab lead at an eligible U.S. university without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement, use the academic-lab application. If your university has an OpenAI Enterprise agreement, contact your university administrator or OpenAI account team to request GPT-Rosalind through that agreement. Ask your university administrator if you’re unsure which route applies to your lab.
If you can’t open the application, check that you’re signed in with your institutional account. Only US accounts qualify. For more help, see “Why can’t I open or start the application?” in the FAQs.
Prepare your lab’s information
Have the following information ready for the application and any follow-up review:
Institution, department, lab name, and the lab’s official website.
The PI or lab lead’s institutional profile, role, and research focus.
Intended use of GPT-Rosalind, the people who need access, and their institutional email addresses and affiliations.
Any existing workspace, intended access locations, and research data-handling requirements.
Name, title, and contact information for a trained biosafety contact at your institution
Follow the application’s instructions for the evidence required.
Understand trusted access verification
Trusted-access review checks whether your lab meets the requirements to use GPT-Rosalind responsibly. This includes reviewing your institution, lab, intended research use, and the PI or lab lead’s authority to oversee access.
Persona verifies your university and the PI or lab lead’s identity as part of this process. If Persona asks for Business Details, provide information about your university. Follow the form’s instructions for the required information.
Persona verification is one part of the review - completing it does not mean your application is approved.
Submit your application
Open the academic-lab application and sign in with the ChatGPT account associated with your institutional .edu email address. Follow the instructions to verify your email.
Provide your institution, lab, role, and intended research use. Complete the required identity verification and attestations, and submit your application for review.
Check your application status for a decision or a request for more information. OpenAI will also email you if your application is approved. Avoid submitting a duplicate application while your review is pending.
Set up your workspace after approval
After you receive an approval email, open your application status page for setup instructions.
Before accepting the offer, review the seats covered, the complimentary period’s end date, and any charges. Follow the setup instructions to accept the offer and the GPT-Rosalind access terms.
Complete workspace setup, then add eligible lab members and enable their GPT-Rosalind access. Use the workspace linked to your approved application. If you can’t complete setup or use the model, follow the steps in “My application was approved. Why can’t I use GPT-Rosalind yet?” in the FAQs.
Manage your lab’s access
If you’re the verified PI or lab lead, add eligible members to the approved workspace and enable their GPT-Rosalind access in the workspace’s admin settings. You are the sole workspace owner - you cannot appoint additional owners or admins. If you’re a lab member, ask your PI or lab lead for access. Joining the workspace alone does not give you access to GPT-Rosalind.
Review members’ access when they leave the lab, change affiliation, or no longer need GPT-Rosalind, and remove access when it is no longer appropriate. If your lab needs to change its PI, workspace owner, or institutional arrangement, contact OpenAI Support for guidance before making the change.
Use remains subject to applicable safety monitoring and responsible-use requirements. Access can be revoked if those requirements are no longer met.
For general information about managing a Business subscription, see: Manage billing and seats in ChatGPT Business.
Data privacy and security
Your lab uses a managed ChatGPT Business workspace. Standard data retention applies by default.
Your organization’s policies and applicable workspace settings govern how you use and share data. Depending on the available controls and applicable law, an administrator may be able to access, export, retain, or delete workspace data. Check your institution’s data-handling requirements before adding research information or sharing content. For more information, see Data access for your managed ChatGPT account.
GPT-Rosalind approval and the complimentary-seat promotion do not change the workspace’s applicable data-handling terms. Zero Data Retention is not available under this offer.
Institutions with an existing OpenAI Enterprise agreement can request GPT-Rosalind access through their Enterprise access process. Their applicable agreement and data-handling terms govern that access.
FAQs
Can my lab apply without a university Enterprise contract?
Yes. Individual academic labs can apply through a PI or designated lab lead without an existing university Enterprise contract. Check your university’s policies before setting up an independent workspace.
Why can’t I open or start the application?
Sign in with the ChatGPT account associated with your institutional .edu email address. If Start is unavailable, check that you’re using the correct account. If your account is managed through a university Enterprise agreement, use your university’s Enterprise access process.
Accessing the application from outside the United States may redirect you to ChatGPT before verification begins. A redirect does not mean Persona rejected your identity verification.
If an institutional account restriction prevents you from applying, contact your university administrator. For help with an application error or redirect, contact OpenAI Support with your account email and a description of what you see.
Does every lab member need to apply separately?
No. Ask your PI or lab lead to apply on behalf of the lab. Once the lab is approved and setup is complete, they can add eligible members and enable GPT-Rosalind access.
Who should I nominate as my institution’s trained biosafety contact?
Ask your institution’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Research Safety, or biosecurity office to identify a trained biosafety contact for your application. You must name one institution-designated official with authority over the proposed work.
This should be:
A biosafety or biosecurity officer in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) or Research Safety.
A lead within an institutional biosecurity program.
A biosafety director or Responsible Official in a select-agent program.
An equivalent institution-designated compliance or safety official with authority over the proposed work.
This contact oversees access decisions under OpenAI’s policies, coordinates biosafety and biosecurity oversight, and confirms training and personnel-access requirements. They also handle safety concerns, incidents, and access reviews with OpenAI. The PI or lab lead manages members and model permissions in the workspace.
Have their full name, title, office or program, institutional email address, and telephone number ready. A PI or lab lead may serve as the biosafety contact if they meet these requirements and their institution designates them for the role.
Can I apply if my lab is outside the United States?
We are currently only accepting applications from university-affiliated research labs in the United States.
Does the complimentary-seat offer include GPT-Rosalind?
Yes. The Rosalind Academic Plan includes complimentary Standard seats and GPT-Rosalind access. Your lab must complete trusted-access review and receive approval. Workspace setup and model activation must then be completed, and the PI or lab lead must enable access for eligible members.
What if my lab needs more than 30 seats?
The Rosalind Academic Plan supports a maximum of 30 seats in one workspace. If your lab needs more, contact OpenAI Support to discuss your requirements. Creating a separate paid workspace does not extend this offer or transfer your lab’s GPT-Rosalind approval.
Can I apply as an individual researcher?
The Rosalind Academic Plan is for eligible academic labs at U.S. universities. A PI or designated lab lead must apply on behalf of the lab. If you are a lab member, ask your PI or lab lead to submit an application. Unaffiliated researchers and commercial organizations are not eligible for this academic offer.
What happens when the complimentary period ends?
Check your accepted offer for the complimentary period’s end date and the terms that apply afterward.
Why is the promotion missing, or why was I charged?
Check that you’re viewing the workspace linked to your approved application. Compare your invoice with your accepted offer, including the promotional dates, seat types, and number of seats.
If the promotion is missing or a charge differs from your offer, contact OpenAI Support with your offer confirmation, workspace ID, and invoice reference or charge date.
My application was approved. Why can’t I use GPT-Rosalind yet?
Switch to the workspace linked to your approved application. If you’re a lab member, ask your PI or lab lead to check that setup is complete and your GPT-Rosalind access is enabled. If you’re the PI or lab lead, check your application status page for any remaining setup steps. If you still can’t use the model, contact OpenAI Support with your application status, workspace ID, and the message or issue you see.
How do I check my application status or ask about a decision?
Check your application status for updates. If you can’t find your application or have a question about a decision, contact OpenAI Support.
Contact OpenAI Support with the application email, institution, current application status, and a description of the issue. Include the workspace name or ID if one has been set up. Submit identity documents only through the designated verification process, and avoid sending sensitive research data to Support.
Can visiting researchers or collaborators join?
All members must use a verified institutional email address with the same email domain as the approved PI or lab lead. Visiting researchers or collaborators using a different institution’s email domain cannot be added.
Does the offer include API credits?
No. The offer does not include API credits or API usage. Approval for this plan does not grant GPT-Rosalind access through the API.
Is this ChatGPT for Academic Researchers?
No. These are separate programs with their own eligibility, application, workspace, and billing requirements. Approval for another academic program does not grant GPT-Rosalind access or this offer. For information about that program, see: ChatGPT for Academic Researchers.
How is the Rosalind Academic Plan different from regular ChatGPT Business?
The Rosalind Academic Plan combines complimentary Standard seats with GPT-Rosalind access for approved academic labs. It has additional eligibility, verification, and lab-access requirements. Buying a regular ChatGPT Business subscription does not enroll your lab in this offer or grant GPT-Rosalind access.
