Groups in ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu

Manage groups and shared access in ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces.

Updated: 2 days ago

Overview

Groups help workspace owners and admins manage access to shared resources, including GPTs, projects, and apps. They can also simplify role-based access control.

Workspace owners and admins can manage manually created groups. Groups synchronized through SCIM are managed in your identity provider.

Create or manage a group

  1. Open Admin Console and select your ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu workspace.

  2. Open Members, groups & roles, then select Groups.

  3. Select Create group.

  4. Enter a group name and optional description.

  5. Add the workspace members you want to include.

To update a manually managed group, open it and select the available option to edit or delete it.

Groups synchronized through tenant-wide SCIM are managed in your identity provider. A global admin can assign a synchronized group to an eligible ChatGPT workspace through Product access. The group appears in the workspace, but its membership cannot be edited or deleted there.

For setup and synchronized-group guidance, see: SCIM provisioning and management.

Limits and availability

  • Maximum number of groups per workspace: 10,000

  • Maximum number of users per group: No limit

FAQ

Who can create and manage groups?

Workspace owners and admins can manage manually created groups. Update SCIM-managed group membership in your identity provider.

Can regular users see groups?

Workspace members may see manually created groups in supported sharing experiences. SCIM-managed groups appear when sharing GPTs or projects only if the workspace allows SCIM group discovery. This does not give members permission to browse or edit the full group directory.

Can users request to join a group?

No. Users must be invited by an owner or admin.

What can I control with groups today?

Groups make it easier to assign workspace roles and share supported resources, including GPTs, projects, and apps. Where available, custom roles can also be assigned directly to individual members. For details, see: Role Based Access Controls for ChatGPT Enterprise.

Can users be members of more than one group?

Yes, users can be members of multiple groups.
