Retiring group chats in ChatGPT

Group chats will begin winding down on July 9, 2026. Your existing group chat history will remain available.

Updated: 10 hours ago

Why we’re making this change

Group chats launched as a pilot to explore more collaborative ways to use ChatGPT. As ChatGPT evolves, we're simplifying the experience and winding down group chats. Beginning July 9, users will no longer be able to create or join new group chats. Existing group chats will remain available for now, will soon become read-only, and users will retain access to their group chat history. We're continuing to explore ways to make ChatGPT more collaborative over time.

We still believe ChatGPT should become more collaborative. Retiring this pilot keeps the product simpler today and lets us apply what we learned to experiences that can serve more people over time.

What happens next

  • Beginning July 9: You can no longer create a group chat, turn an existing conversation into a group chat, or join one through an invite link.

  • During the transition: Existing group chats remain active. You can keep using a chat until it becomes read-only. Timing may vary as this change rolls out.

  • After a chat becomes read-only: You can open it and review the messages, files, and images already shared there, but you can no longer send new messages.

FAQs

Do I need to do anything before my group chat becomes read-only?

No action is required to preserve your history. If your group is still using the chat, decide where to continue the conversation before it becomes read-only. If you want a separate copy, you can request an export through ChatGPT or the OpenAI Privacy Portal. Learn more about exporting your ChatGPT history and data.

Can someone new join an existing group chat after July 9?

No. New participants cannot join, including through an existing invite link. People who already have access can continue using the group chat until it becomes read-only.

Does this affect my individual ChatGPT conversations?

No. This change applies only to group chats.
