ChatGPT for Teachers

Learn who can use ChatGPT for Teachers, how to get started, and how to set up a school or district workspace.

Updated: 55 minutes ago

ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028 for verified U.S. K–12 educators.

Overview

ChatGPT for Teachers is a secure, self-serve version of ChatGPT for U.S. K–12 educators. It gives teachers and school staff a place to use AI with classroom materials and student data, supported by education-grade protections and admin controls that help schools meet their compliance needs.

Availability and pricing

You’re eligible if you:

  • Work for an accredited U.S. K–12 school or district, and

  • Are a teacher, staff member, school leader, or district administrator

After the free period, we may introduce or adjust pricing, with the goal of keeping the plan affordable for educators. If pricing changes, we’ll provide advance notice consistent with our terms.

The plan is not for students. Each workspace is limited to verified educators within the same district.

Get started as an educator

Create a Teachers workspace

  1. Go to the educator verification page. Sign in or create a ChatGPT account using your school or district email address.

  2. Complete educator verification using the same email address.

  3. After verification, you’ll return to the educator verification page in ChatGPT. Select Create a new workspace or Create workspace. If you aren’t returned automatically, or your verification finishes later, reopen the educator verification page. Sign in with the same account you used for verification if prompted.

  4. Enter a workspace name. Review the Teacher Access Terms and Student Data Privacy Agreement, select the agreement checkbox, then select Agree and Continue.

  5. Follow the onboarding prompts to set your role, subjects, and grade levels.

Join an existing workspace

If your school or district already has a Teachers workspace, select it when offered and follow the prompts to join or request access. You can also ask a workspace owner or admin to send an invitation to your school email address. Open the invitation and sign in or create an account using that email address.

Resolve verification errors

If you see “Unknown error” when submitting verification documents, open the verification page in another browser. Use the same ChatGPT account and sign-in method, then retry the submission.

If verification errors continue or you’re unable to verify your educator eligibility, contact OpenAI Support through the chat bubble in the Help Center.

Included features

ChatGPT for Teachers includes OpenAI’s flagship model, along with teacher-specific onboarding, prompts, and recommended use cases. You can use:

For more about the plan’s features, see: ChatGPT for Teachers.

Set up a school or district workspace

Workspace owners and admins can manage members, roles, and workspace settings. Admin tools include single sign-on (SSO), role-based access controls, domain claiming, and analytics.

Verify your district domain

Verify your district email domain if domain verification is available for your workspace. For instructions, see: Verifying your domain for OpenAI identity. If self-service verification is unavailable, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center chat bubble.

Claim your domain if needed

District admins can request a domain claim to bring educators into a district-managed workspace. Domain claiming is separate from domain verification and is not required to enable SCIM directory sync.

A claim can direct people with matching email addresses to the claimed workspace and can make other ChatGPT for Teachers workspaces using that domain inaccessible. Review these effects with your school or district before requesting a claim.

To request a claim, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center chat bubble. Begin your message with “Request to Complete Domain Claim - Chat GPT For Teachers” and include your district name and domain.

Configure staff access

Owners and admins can invite eligible staff directly. Eligible ChatGPT for Teachers K–12 district tenants can also use tenant-wide SCIM to synchronize staff groups from an identity provider.

To set up SCIM:

  1. Have a global admin configure tenant-wide directory sync. At least one domain must be verified for the same tenant. For setup instructions, see: Connect a tenant directory in SCIM provisioning and management.

  2. Start with a small pilot group of intended staff from your identity provider. Exclude student accounts and student groups.

  3. Assign the synchronized staff groups to your Teachers workspace. For instructions, see: Assign synchronized groups and product access. Check workspace invitations and membership after synchronization.

If SSO is available for your workspace, configure it for your district. For instructions, see: Single sign-on (SSO) setup for OpenAI products. Review workspace permissions and settings before rollout.

Test access before rollout

Selecting staff groups for SCIM does not restrict other ways people can join the workspace. Review existing members, direct invitations, and domain-based joining separately.

  1. Test with a small staff group. Confirm sign-in, invitation acceptance where required, and access to the intended Teachers workspace.

  2. Use a test account that should not have access to confirm it cannot join through another access method.

  3. If you use SCIM, remove a test user from the provider assignment or group. Wait for a successful sync and verify that group-driven access is removed. Check direct invitations, other groups, and manually granted workspace access separately, and remove access that should no longer apply.

  4. After successful testing, expand synchronization to the remaining intended staff groups, or invite eligible staff who aren’t managed through SCIM. Tell staff to sign in with their district email address and follow the available prompts to join or open the district workspace.
