Overview

A ChatGPT Business workspace consists of Standard and Premium seats, which include usage for features such as Codex, reasoning models, and agentic features. When that included usage is exhausted, workspace credits can cover additional eligible usage, subject to your workspace’s spend controls. Use this article to add credits, manage automatic reload, and set monthly credit usage limits.

Workspaces with legacy Codex seats also use the shared workspace credit balance for Codex activity. For details, see:Managing legacy Codex seats in ChatGPT Business. If your workspace does not have enough credits, features that require credits may be unavailable until credits are added.

How ChatGPT seat types use credits

Included usage is evaluated for the paid ChatGPT seat assigned to each member. After that included usage is consumed, eligible activity may draw from the workspace credit pool when flexible pricing is enabled and spend controls permit it. Credits can be used across all seat types, after included usage is exhausted.

Workspace Owners should review paid seat assignments, available credits, automatic recharge, alerts, and workspace spend limits together. Changing a member's paid seat type can change included usage, but it does not create a separate credit pool.

Add credits to a workspace

• Sign in as aworkspace owner.
• Go to Workspace settings → Billing.
• Select the option to add credits.
• Review the payment method, credit amount, and note that credits are valid for 12 months.
• Confirm the purchase.

Use automatic reload

Automatic reload helps prevent interruptions when a workspace uses credits. You can set a Minimum balance so ChatGPT automatically charges your payment method on file to add credits when your balance goes below that amount and tops up to your Target balance. If your workspace balance is already below the Minimum balance when you turn on automatic reload, ChatGPT may charge the payment method on file right away to add credits, up to the Target balance and subject to any Monthly recharge limit. To cap automatic reload purchases, enter a Monthly recharge limit; leaving this field blank allows unlimited automatic reload purchases each month.

• Go to Workspace settings → Billing.
• Turn on Automatic reload.
• Review the Minimum balance, Target balance, Monthly recharge limit, and payment method.
• Click Turn on to enable the change.

Manage spend controls

Workspace owners and admins can manage monthly credit usage limits by seat type and per-user overrides. Only workspace owners can purchase credits or manage automatic reload.

Set monthly credit usage limits for Standard and Premium seats to manage additional usage beyond each member’s included allowance. You can set different limits for each seat type and a per-user override, which takes precedence over the seat-type limit. If your workspace has legacy Codex seats, you can manage their credit usage limits separately.

By default, all seats and users have no limits specified.

To add a limit:

• Go to Workspace settings → Billing.
• Identify the seat type you want to add a limit for, and click Add to set a credit maximum.
• You can also set a Per user override. Click Manage to select limits per user, and then Add to set the limit.

Privacy

Spend controls are operational tools. They do not replace the privacy and chat-visibility rules for the workspace.

A user's private chat history is still separate unless that user chooses to share a specific chat, GPT, or other resource.
