Overview
Your dot is an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can help you take a project from an idea to work you can use. Give it a goal, share the context, and it can keep making progress between conversations.
With its own computer and the apps you connect, your dot can research, create, and follow through on tasks. It starts with context from ChatGPT memory and learns how you like to work. You choose what it can do on its own, review its work, and give feedback or change direction as you go. You can pause it at any time.
What can my dot help with?
Start with a project you’d like help seeing through:
Prepare a presentation. Pull together data and customer feedback, investigate what changed, and update the deck as new information comes in.
Create content. Turn an interview transcript into show notes and social posts, then carry your edits across the drafts.
Improve an app. Scope a change, write code, and test it so you have working changes to review.
Which plans include dots?
Dots are rolling out in ChatGPT to Pro users aged 18 and older in markets excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK. Dots are also available to Business Premium users in supported ChatGPT regions, subject to workspace eligibility requirements. Enterprise users (including Edu and Healthcare) can try the beta when their workspace admin enables it, but it is initially turned off by default. Workspace settings, encryption, and data or inference residency requirements can also affect eligibility.
Your first dot is included in your Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost. It’s available 24/7 to talk, help you think, and stay on top of what matters to you. Your plan also includes an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch. In the future, you’ll be able to add more dots, and scale the output of each dot by either increasing its speed or the total amount of work it can take on per month.
Dots are rolling out gradually. Access may take several days to reach your account.
Getting started
How do I set up my dot?
Create your dot in the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS or Android, the desktop app, or on desktop web. Follow the onboarding prompts to get started. Use the latest version of the mobile app for mobile setup. The desktop app is also available on Windows.
You can also talk to your dot in the ChatGPT mobile app. Dots are not supported on mobile web.
You can give your dot a name during setup. Its default handle is @yourname-dot. When you name it, its handle becomes @yourname-agentname. To change its name or avatar later, select its name or avatar to open the profile, then select the pencil icon.
You can choose from the available characters or select a pet for your dot. Your dot may also generate a pet for you.
Working with your dot
How is my dot different from a regular ChatGPT conversation?
Your dot is an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can take on ongoing responsibility and keep making progress between conversations. Your dot has its own cloud computer, works across the apps you choose to connect, and remembers context to help with ongoing work.
Give your dot a goal and define what it can do on its own. It can work through complex problems, figure out what needs to happen next, and bring results back for your review. It turns to you for decisions that need your judgment.
How do I give my dot a task?
Describe what you want your dot to do and share the details it needs. For example, you can ask it to review your calendar, research a topic, or remind you about something later. You can reply in the conversation to provide more information or change the request.
To attach a file or photo, select + in the conversation.
Open your dot’s profile on the desktop app to review activity under In progress, Scheduled, and Completed. You can also open your dot’s computer from the profile to view and interact with it. On mobile, the computer opens in your control.
Can my dot use my own computer?
Your dot has its own cloud computer. Access to your local computer is optional and starts turned off. To connect a computer, use the ChatGPT desktop app on that computer. Work on your local computer runs in separate tasks that appear in the sidebar.
When you connect a computer and confirm Allow access, your dot can access files and work on that computer from any of its messaging channels. Confirm Revoke access to stop your dot from accessing files or working on that computer.
With local computer access enabled, your dot can create Work or Codex tasks, use local skills, and use your local browser when its cloud browser is blocked.
Can my dot use Codex cloud environments?
Your dot can create cloud tasks in Codex cloud environments. Create the environment in Codex before asking your dot to use it.
Connected apps
How do I connect and manage apps?
Connected apps give your dot access to information it can use for your tasks. Your dot can also review that information proactively and form memories from it, even when you haven’t asked a specific question about it.
To review or connect an app on mobile, open your dot’s profile and go to Customize > Plugins. Select a supported app and review its permissions before connecting it. The Plugins screen uses shared ChatGPT settings. Available apps may differ.
You can disconnect connected apps. Disconnecting an app does not delete information your dot has already obtained from it. Deleting your dot removes information it saved in its own memories. See How do I reset my dot? below.
Can I connect my dot to Slack or email?
You can connect your dot to Slack from ChatGPT on desktop. You can also connect your personal email account so your dot can use it for your tasks. At launch, you cannot give your dot its own standalone email address.
Can my dot call me?
Your dot cannot initiate calls to you at launch.
Scheduled tasks
How do I schedule tasks and receive updates?
Ask your dot to set a reminder or run a recurring check. For example, you could ask it to review your calendar each morning and tell you what’s coming up.
Scheduled runs and proactive updates appear in the conversation. To manage a scheduled task, select it in Recent activity in your dot's profile, or open the Scheduled section in ChatGPT. You can review active, paused, and completed tasks. Open a task to change its repeat schedule, time, or completion notifications.
When can my dot start work without a new message from me?
Your dot can research in the background and suggest ways to help. It can also review connected information proactively and form memories from it, even when you haven’t asked a new question. It can run reminders or recurring tasks you’ve scheduled. You can review scheduled work in your dot’s profile or pause your dot when you don’t want it to continue.
Texting
Who can text a dot?
Texting is available in beta to a limited number of Pro users in the US. It isn’t supported in Business or Enterprise workspaces.
You need iMessage or RCS to text your dot.
How do I text my dot?
You can connect your phone in the ChatGPT mobile app, on desktop web, or in the desktop app:
Open your dot’s profile and select Texting.
Enter your phone number and select Send confirmation text.
Enter the code you receive and select Verify phone number.
Once your number is verified, you can text your dot from your phone.
If you don’t see Texting in your dot’s profile, texting isn’t available for your account yet – try again later.
Can my dot see my other text conversations?
No. Turning on texting only lets you message your dot. It doesn’t give your dot or OpenAI access to your other text conversations.
Can other people text my dot?
No. Texting works one-on-one between you and your dot. Your dot can’t participate in group texts.
What if I send my dot an SMS?
SMS isn’t supported. If you send an SMS from your connected number, you may get an automatic reply asking you to use iMessage, RCS, or the ChatGPT app instead. Your carrier’s SMS rates apply.
Can I call my dot’s phone number?
No, you can only text your dot’s phone number.
To call your dot, open its conversation in the ChatGPT mobile app and select the phone button.
Are texts to my dot end-to-end encrypted?
We use Linq, a third-party messaging provider, to send and receive texts for your dot. As part of our partnership with Linq, we’ve done extensive security vetting with our frontier models and third-party security firms. Because Linq processes these messages on the way to OpenAI, the conversation is not end-to-end encrypted between you and your dot, even when you use iMessage or RCS.
How are my messages protected and stored?
Linq processes your texts to deliver them but doesn’t retain their contents after delivery. It limits when its staff can access your texts. It may retain limited information about delivery, such as timestamps and delivery status. OpenAI stores your texts as part of your dot’s conversations in ChatGPT, as described in our Privacy Policy.
Before launch, OpenAI reviewed its connection to Linq, and an independent firm tested Linq’s messaging service.
How do I stop texts from my dot?
Reply STOP to stop receiving texts from your dot.
You can also turn off texting in the ChatGPT app or on desktop web:
Open your dot’s profile.
Select Texting > Turn off texting.
Does turning off texting delete my conversations?
No. Turning off texting disconnects your phone number. It doesn’t delete your past conversations or saved memories in ChatGPT, either immediately or after 30 days.
Do message or data charges apply?
Message and data rates may apply. Review the notice when you enable texting, along with OpenAI’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
Memory
How does my dot use memory?
Your dot receives memories from ChatGPT and can create its own memories, including from connected apps. This lets it use context in ongoing work.
On mobile, Customize > Memory shows what ChatGPT remembers. This screen uses shared ChatGPT memory settings.
To delete your dot’s own saved memories, you need to delete your dot. See How do I reset my dot? below.
Controls and approvals
How do I manage confirmations and custom rules?
For some actions, you can set rules for what your dot can share, purchase, or access.
On mobile, open Customize > Custom rules to review the default rules or add a rule. Describe the action the rule covers, then choose one of the available behaviors:
Take action without asking
Take action if pre-approved
Ask before taking action
Hand off to you
“Pre-approved” means you explicitly requested the action in your prompt. Save the rule with the checkmark, then review it in Custom rules.
Your dot can make mistakes, including when following your rules. Review its work and check important details before relying on the result.
How do I pause my dot?
To stop your dot until you’re ready to resume, open the more options menu (•••) in its profile and select Pause. To start it again, select Paused • Tap to resume.
How do I reset my dot?
Deleting your dot removes its own saved memories and scheduled tasks. Any separate Work or Codex chats it created are kept. Your main conversation is archived, and you can’t continue it with that dot. Save anything you’ll need from the conversation before you confirm. Deletion can’t be undone.
Open your dot’s profile and select the more options menu (•••).
Select Delete.
Select Delete to confirm or Cancel to keep your dot.
Deleting your dot doesn’t create a replacement. You can create a new dot on a device where setup is available to you.
Troubleshooting your dot
My dot can’t use my computer or local tools
Enable local access in the ChatGPT desktop app on the computer you want your dot to use:
Open your dot’s profile.
Under Computers, find Your computer and select Allow access.
Review the confirmation and select Allow access again.
Keep that computer online with the ChatGPT app open. Offline means the computer is unavailable; it doesn’t revoke the connection. If Allow access is unavailable, check that you’re using the desktop app on that computer.
Connecting a computer to Codex or enabling Work Sync doesn’t give your dot local access. Local skills require a computer connected to your dot.
My dot can’t use an app or website
For a connected app, check that the supported plugin is installed and connected to the correct account. Review its allowed actions: permission to read information may not include permission to change it or send messages. If the connection has expired, open the reconnection request and reconnect it.
Your dot’s cloud browser has its own sign-in sessions. Signing in on your personal computer doesn’t sign your dot in. Complete the sign-in request, including any website verification, or use takeover to sign in yourself. Return control when you’re done.
If a website blocks the cloud browser, you can ask your dot to try your connected computer. This may create a separate local task and doesn’t transfer the cloud browser’s session or guarantee that the website will work.
I approved an action, but it’s still blocked
Open the affected task and check for a separate sign-in, connection, or approval request. Review the relevant custom rule: if it requires an explicit instruction, ask for the action directly. Asking for a draft doesn’t authorize sending it.
Custom rules don’t grant app or computer access or override built-in safeguards. Some steps, such as changing a password, must be completed by you.
I can’t find my dot’s work or files
In the ChatGPT desktop app, select your dot’s name or avatar to open its profile. Open the relevant task to review its progress, files, and results. Local tasks appear in the sidebar on the connected computer; recurring work is under Scheduled.
Check the task’s original computer or cloud environment. Changing your dot’s selected computer doesn’t move an existing task.
To inspect your dot’s cloud computer, look under Computers in its profile. If you need control, select Take over, then Return control when your dot can continue.
My dot stopped working or missed an instruction
Open the affected task and respond to any pending decision, approval, sign-in, or connection request. If your dot is paused, resume it.
For recurring work, open Scheduled and check the saved instructions and timing. Review the result even when a run is marked completed.
Give corrections directly in the affected task, including the result you need and relevant files or links. Each task has its own conversation and doesn’t automatically receive every conversation you’ve had with your dot.
I can’t find my dot
Check that you’re using the intended account and workspace, then open chatgpt.com/dots.
Pro: Available to users aged 18 and older outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Business Premium: Available in supported ChatGPT regions, subject to workspace eligibility requirements.
Enterprise, including Edu and Healthcare: Beta access must be enabled by your workspace admin; it’s off by default.
Availability is subject to gradual rollout.
Trouble calling your dot?
Open your dot’s conversation and select the phone button to call it. If calling isn’t working but chat is available, you can continue the conversation by typing there.
What do Memory settings and Reset change?
On mobile, Customize > Memory shows shared ChatGPT memory settings. Your dot’s own saved memories are separate; changing those settings doesn’t necessarily change notes your dot has already saved.
Deleting your dot removes its own saved memories and scheduled tasks. Any separate Work or Codex chats it created are kept. Save any results you need and review the deletion notice before confirming.
