Why can't I log in to ChatGPT?

Troubleshooting login issues

Updated: 2 days ago

General Troubleshooting Steps

When signing in with email, use the email address on your ChatGPT account. This may be different from the email address where you receive invoices or receipts.

If you’re still signed in to ChatGPT on the web, go to Settings > Account to check your account email before signing out. If you changed your account email, use the new address.

If you use Google, Microsoft, or Apple to sign in, select the corresponding sign-in option and use the same provider account.

If you selected Hide My Email when signing up with Apple, your ChatGPT account may use an @privaterelay.appleid.com address. Select Continue with Apple and use the same Apple account to access it. For help finding the private relay address, see: View your Hide My Email addresses.

If you still can’t identify the account, contact OpenAI Support. Include the email addresses and sign-in methods you tried, your billing email if different, and relevant subscription details.

On a managed device or network, ask your IT team before changing VPN, proxy, browser extension, or cookie settings.

If you’re having trouble logging into ChatGPT after previously being able to log in:

  • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.

  • We recommend trying again using a desktop device.

  • Check your authentication method. Try the method you used to create your account. If you added another sign-in method, use one enabled for your account. For available options and MFA requirements, see: Changing your account sign-in method.

  • Use an incognito window. Sometimes browser extensions or cached data can cause issues; an incognito window helps rule this out.

  • Try a different device or browser. Some extensions, outdated browsers, or device configurations can interfere with login.

  • Try Continue with Apple if you signed up with Apple, using the same Apple account. If you enabled Apple's Hide My Email, your account may be tied to an @privaterelay.appleid.com address, so trying to log in with your personal email or another provider can trigger "There is already a user with email…" or "Wrong authentication method" errors.

  • Resolve Cloudflare verification loops (“Checking your browser…”):

    • Temporarily pause any personal VPN or proxy services and refresh the page.

    • Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy tools, or script blockers.

    • Ensure cookies (including third-party) and JavaScript are allowed for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth.openai.com.

    • Try again in an incognito/private window or with a clean browser profile.

    • Switch to a different network (e.g., from corporate WiFi to mobile data).

    • On corporate or managed networks, your IT team may need to allowlist Cloudflare challenges; contact them if the loop persists.

  • Check cookie-consent banners and cookie/ad-block settings. Some cookie-consent overlays, cookie managers, or ad/tracker blockers may block login buttons or verification flows; disable those tools or accept site cookies for help.openai.com, chatgpt.com, and auth.openai.com and then retry.

If sign-in fails in the ChatGPT iOS app

Try signing in to the same account on the web. If that works but sign-in still fails in the ChatGPT iOS app, try removing and reinstalling the app, then sign in using your original sign-in method.

Fix a “Cookies are disabled” error with Google sign-in on iOS

If Google sign-in reports that cookies are disabled:

  1. Open your device's Settings and select Apps > Safari.

  2. Select Advanced.

  3. Turn off Block All Cookies.

  4. Return to ChatGPT and try signing in with Google again.

For Apple's instructions, see: Safari cookies settings.

Set a browser for Android sign-in

If the sign-in page doesn't open or complete, try installing or updating Google Chrome and setting it as your default browser:

  1. Open your device's Settings.

  2. Select Apps, then Default apps.

  3. Select Browser app, then Chrome.

  4. Return to ChatGPT and try signing in again.

The Settings names can vary by device manufacturer. Chrome and Brave are supported options for the browser-based sign-in flow.

Sign in to Android with Microsoft

If you created your ChatGPT account with Microsoft:

  1. Open ChatGPT and select Log in or Log in or sign up, depending on the screen shown.

  2. If the sign-in page asks for your email address first, enter the address associated with your account.

  3. Select Continue with Microsoft when the sign-in options appear, then complete the Microsoft prompts using the same Microsoft account.

Update Google Play after a “Something went wrong” error

An outdated Google Play Store version can cause this sign-in error. To check for an update:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app and select your profile picture.

  2. Select Settings > About.

  3. Select Update Play Store.

  4. Follow the update message. If an update is available, allow a few minutes for it to install, then try ChatGPT again.

For Google's current instructions, see: Updating the Google Play app.

If ChatGPT shows a more specific Google Play message, follow that message:

  • Enable Google Play Store: Select Open settings, enable Google Play Store, then try signing in again.

  • Update Google Play services: Use the update link in the message, complete the Google Play services update, then retry. Google Play services is separate from the Google Play Store app.

Error: "There is already a user with email..." or "Wrong authentication method"

This error can occur when you try to log in using a sign-in method that isn't enabled for your account.

  • Example: If you signed up with Google authentication, try Continue with Google with the same Google account.

  • If you’re unsure which method you originally used, try each of the following:

    • Username + Password

    • "Continue with Google"

    • "Continue with Microsoft"

    • "Continue with Apple"

Use an incognito window for a clean login attempt if you’re unsure.

Error: "This user already exists" During Sign-Up

This usually means:

  • You already began the sign-up process previously but did not complete it.

  • Instead of trying to sign up again, attempt to log in.

Received a Welcome Email But No Verification Email?

  • Visit chatgpt.com/auth/login and try logging in using your signup method.

  • Completing the login process there should prompt account activation if needed.

Error: "We have detected suspicious login behavior"

If you see a suspicious login warning:

  1. Clear your browser cache and cookies.

  2. Try a different network (e.g., switch from WiFi to mobile data or vice versa).

  3. Temporarily pause your personal VPN, if you use one.

  4. Wait up to 1 hour before attempting to log in again — multiple failed attempts can trigger temporary restrictions.

If issues persist:

  • Try signing in with a different browser, device, or network.

  • Incognito/private browsing mode can also help eliminate conflicts with browser extensions.

Other Login Errors ("Something went wrong" or "Oops...")

If you continue seeing generic login errors:

  • Wait at least 60 seconds, then try again.

  • Check status.openai.com to confirm whether there is an active service issue.

  • If no outage is reported, clear your cache and cookies.

  • Try using an incognito window.

  • Attempt login from a different device, network, or browser.

  • Disable browser extensions temporarily to rule out conflicts.

Account deactivated or suspended

  • If your account was deactivated or suspended, you will not be able to sign in. Check any email notifications from OpenAI for details and next steps. If you believe this is an error, contact support and include any account-related emails.

  • Using a different email address or provider account can create separate accounts and subscriptions. OpenAI doesn't automatically merge accounts — make sure you're signing in with the account that has the subscription or data you expect.

  • If you need billing help but cannot access the account, include relevant billing or payment information in your support request and indicate the email(s) or sign-in method(s) you attempted. Support can advise on recovery steps or verify ownership as needed.

  • If verification codes arrive late or expire, request a new code and always use the most recent one. Check spam/quarantine folders and allowlist noreply@openai.com. If the OpenAI login-code sender is on your blocked-sender list, remove that block, then request a new code. If you do not receive codes, try a different network, temporarily pause personal VPNs or ad blockers, or contact your email administrator/provider.

  • If a "Continue with Google/Microsoft/Apple" button is missing, try a hard refresh, another browser, or an incognito window. Disable extensions that alter page content. If the button still does not appear, try the provider's login flow separately and then return to chatgpt.com/auth/login.

  • For Business/Enterprise SSO invites or SAML errors, confirm with your organization’s IT admin that the invite went to the correct email and that your account is provisioned. Admins may need to resend the invite or check identity provider settings.

  • Export, verification, or recovery links can expire. If a link has expired, request a new export or recovery link from the application or ask support for next steps.

If you require additional assistance, please contact our support team. For an issue you can reproduce in a browser, Support may ask for a HAR file. Follow the recording and sanitizing instructions in the linked article.

Can’t access the email inbox on your account

If you can’t receive login, verification, or password reset emails because you no longer have access to the email inbox on your account, self-serve troubleshooting won’t help.

  • SMS is not an alternative for email-based login or verification.

  • If you have a subscription, contact Support to request cancellation help.

  • When contacting Support, include the account email address, the sign-in method you tried, and any relevant billing or subscription details so we can help verify ownership and next steps.

Contacting support

If you still can’t log in after trying the steps above, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center at help.openai.com.

If an error message appears, copy and paste the entire error message into your support request. Be sure to include the request ID, if one is shown. Copy the full ID exactly as it appears, including all letters, numbers, and hyphens. It may appear near the end of the message after “Please include the request ID”.

If you can’t copy the text, attach a screenshot that clearly shows the full error message and request ID.
