Chats
Chats are saved in your account until you delete them. To learn more about data controls, see Data Controls FAQ.
Once you delete a chat or delete your account, chats are deleted from our systems within 30 days, unless they have previously been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or we have to keep them for security or legal reasons.
You can not recover chats once you delete them. If you want to remove a chat from being visible in your chat history but retain it in your account, you should use the archive function.
Archived chats are retained just like your unarchived chats. Archiving a chat simply removes it from your chat history sidebar. Archived chats can be found and managed in your ChatGPT Settings.
Check How your data is used to improve model performance to understand how content may be used to improve model performance and the choices that you have. If you are using Temporary chats, we will delete those chats within 30 days. You can also learn more about Temporary chats here: Temporary Chat FAQ.
For details about how to delete/archive chats and how to manage archived chats, see How chat retention works in ChatGPT.
Files
Files uploaded to ChatGPT are saved in your account up to the retention period of the corresponding chat. Files uploaded as knowledge to a custom GPT are retained until you delete the custom GPT.
Once you delete a chat containing a file, your account, or a custom GPT, the associated file is deleted from our systems within 30 days, unless it has previously been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or we have to keep it for security or legal reasons.
