Account switching lets you stay signed in to two ChatGPT accounts at the same time and switch between them instantly — no logging out required.
This makes it easy to keep your work and personal usage separate while using the same browser or device.
What the account switcher does
With the account switcher, you can:
Be signed into two accounts in the same session
Switch between them instantly
Keep chats, memory, history, billing and workspaces fully separate
Each account remains independent. Switching does not merge or combine them.
How the account switcher works
Stay signed into 2 accounts
You can be logged into:
A personal account (e.g., bobby@gmail.com)
A work account (e.g., bobby@acmecorp.com)
Only one account is active at a time, but switching is immediate.
You can have a maximum of two accounts active in the switcher per session. You can still create additional accounts, but you’ll need to log out to access more than two at once.
Add an account
To add a second account:
Open the account menu
Select “Add account”
Sign in or create a new account.
You do not need to log out of your current account to add another one.
Creating a second account does not require payment. Your newly created account will start on the free plan by default.
Switch accounts
Use the account menu to switch accounts. When you switch, all chats, memory, files and settings will reflect the selected account. Workspaces (if applicable) will be scoped to that account.
Switching is not merging. Switching does not:
Move chats between accounts
Share memory or conversation history
Share files or uploads
Combine billing or subscriptions
Merge workspaces
If you want your work data governed by your organization, make sure you are using your work account before starting a conversation.
Work and Enterprise accounts
If your organization manages your ChatGPT account:
Your administrator may be able to access and manage data tied to that account.
Data created in your managed account is governed by your organization’s policies.
Switching accounts does not change which policies apply.
You can read more here. If you’re unsure which account you’re using, check the active account shown in the account menu. If you have questions about your organization-managed account, contact your IT administrator.
Frequently asked questions
Can I merge two accounts via account switching?
No. Account switching allows you to access multiple accounts easily, but it does not merge them.
Can I use this with all plan types?
Account switching can be used with all plan types, but your organization may control whether account switching is available for your managed workspace. If you don’t see the option to add or switch accounts in a managed workspace, check with your workspace administrator.
What happens if my workspace is deactivated?
If a workspace tied to an account is deactivated:
You may see a banner explaining the change.
You may be prompted to sign in with a different account or purchase a new subscription (depending on plan type).
ChatGPT will not automatically switch you to another account.
When should I use a second account?
A separate account is useful if you want:
Clear separation between work and personal chats
Separate conversation history
Different billing or subscription plans
Different workspaces
Different privacy or administrative controls
If you want your work activity to stay under your organization’s governance, use your managed work account for work-related conversations.
