File storage and Library in ChatGPT

Updated: yesterday

Library is available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users and to Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces, including those in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The files you upload to and create in ChatGPT are saved to your Library, so you can find and reuse them later. Library is available on web, and its storage is separate from daily attachment/chat limits.

ChatGPT automatically saves uploaded and created files, including files uploaded in chats (for example: documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images) in a dedicated, secure location so they can be easily accessed later. Generated images will continue to appear in the Images tab.

How do I add a saved file to a chat?

  1. Open the composer menu (the attachment/add button).

  2. Select Add from library.

  3. Choose the file you want to use.

If Google Drive is connected, you can select a Drive file from Library, pull it up directly from the composer, or use @mentions to add it to a conversation without uploading it again. To work with a folder, select it in Library and ask ChatGPT to work across the files it contains.

What files are saved?

ChatGPT automatically saves uploaded and created files, including files uploaded in chats (for example: documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images) in a dedicated, secure location so they can be easily accessed later.

Generated images will continue to appear in the Images tab.

Google Drive files shown in Library remain connected to their original source in Drive, so you can return to the source file when needed.

How do I find a saved file or chat?

To find saved files, open the Library from the left-hand sidebar. You can browse uploaded and generated files in one place. To add files directly from Library, select Upload or drag files into Library. Use the Storage button in Library to check your total usage, remaining storage, and whether you are over your limit.

You can also use the search bar to find files. Results can be filtered by:

  • Uploaded or Generated files

  • File type (Images, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, PDFs)

  • Show all file types (when available), which also includes files whose names start with a period

If you’ve connected the Google Drive app, Google Drive files also appear in Library, so you can browse or search your Drive files and folders from the same place.

How do I delete a saved file?

Files are saved to your account until you delete them manually. Deleting a chat containing files does not delete those files saved to Library.

To delete a file:

  1. Select the file in the “Library” tab

  2. Click Delete, or click the trash icon next to the file.

When you delete a file, it is removed from your main Library view immediately. If your Library includes Recently deleted, you can restore the file from there until it is permanently deleted, or permanently delete it sooner by choosing Delete forever or Delete all in Recently deleted.

Deleted files are scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, unless:

  • The chat has already been de-identified and disassociated from you, or

  • OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal obligations.

To learn more about how to delete or archive chats, see here. To learn more about our chat and file retention policies, see here.

Connected Google Drive files and folders in Library can’t be deleted from ChatGPT. To delete or manage a file, open the original item in Google Drive.

What are the file size restrictions?

  • All files uploaded to a GPT or a ChatGPT conversation have a hard limit of 512MB per file.

  • All text and document files uploaded to a GPT or to a ChatGPT conversation are capped at 2M tokens per file. This limitation does not apply to spreadsheets.

  • For CSV files or spreadsheets, the file size cannot exceed approximately 50MB, depending on the size of each row.

  • For images, there's a limit of 20MB per image.

What are the storage limits?

  • Free users have 500 MB of Library storage.

  • Go users have 4 GB of Library storage.

  • Plus and Business users have 20 GB of Library storage.

  • Pro users have 100 GB of Library storage.

How do I download my saved files?

You can download files by selecting one or more files in Library and clicking the Download button.

Do files uploaded in Temporary Chats get saved?

No, files uploaded while using Temporary Chat are not saved to your account or Library.

How will OpenAI use my saved files and chats?

OpenAI uses your files and chats according to your settings and data controls. For example, if you have turned on Memory, files and chats may be used to help ChatGPT remember useful details about you between chats.

Do files uploaded using ChatGPT Health get saved?

No, where ChatGPT Health is available, files uploaded when you’re using ChatGPT Health are not saved to your account.

Will OpenAI use my saved files and chats to train models?

OpenAI may use content (including files you upload) submitted to ChatGPT and other services for individuals to improve model performance if you have “Improve the model for everyone” turned on. You can turn it off anytime in Settings > Data Controls.

How are Library files retained in Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces?

Files uploaded to or created in ChatGPT and saved to Library are retained according to the workspace’s retention policy.

Can workspace owners control how Library files are used?

Workspace owners can control whether ChatGPT automatically references Library files when responding to a prompt. Turning this off does not remove Library or prevent members from browsing, searching, opening, or attaching Library files themselves. For Healthcare workspaces, automatic referencing is off by default.

Does Library introduce new sharing or collaboration?

No. Library lets members find and reuse their files and generated content, but does not introduce external sharing or multiplayer collaboration.

Can compliance admins export or delete Library files?

Yes. Compliance admins can export and delete Library files through the Library-specific Compliance API endpoints. Learn more in OpenAI Compliance Platform for Enterprise and Edu Customers.

Google Drive in Library

How do I access Google Drive from Library?

Connect the Google Drive app in ChatGPT. Once connected, Google Drive appears in Library automatically, where you can view and browse available Drive files and folders alongside files uploaded to or created in ChatGPT.

Google Drive in Library is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and Business users on the web in both the Chat and Work toggles. Mobile support will follow.

Which Google Drive files and folders can I see in Library?

The initial experience includes files and folders in My Drive and items shared directly with you. Shared Drives aren’t included yet. ChatGPT follows your existing Google Drive permissions, so you’ll only see content available to the Google account you connected.

How can I use a Google Drive file or folder with ChatGPT?

You can browse or search for a Drive file in Library, add it to a conversation from the composer or with @mentions, and keep Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides open beside the conversation while you work. You can ask ChatGPT to summarize, analyze, compare, or create something new from a file. You can also select a folder and ask ChatGPT to work across the files it contains.

Can I edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides from ChatGPT?

Where supported and authorized, ChatGPT can update the source file directly. Some Google Drive editing and collaboration features aren’t available in ChatGPT, so you may need to open the original file in Drive for the full Google experience.
