ChatGPT Business - Single Seat Configuration

This article explains how eligible customers can start and manage a ChatGPT Business workspace with 1 paid seat.

Updated: 2 days ago

Availability is limited. Check whether you can select 1 paid seat during checkout.

Overview

Some customers can start a new ChatGPT Business workspace with 1 paid Standard or Premium seat. A paid seat is capacity in your workspace, separate from the member assigned to it. Note that this feature is not broadly available to all ChatGPT Business users.

For plan features and seat types, see: ChatGPT Business overview.

Availability

The 1-seat option is available to some customers creating a new workspace. If checkout doesn't let you select 1 paid seat, the minimum shown during checkout applies. Existing workspaces may have a different minimum.

Start a workspace with a single seat

If the option is available to you:

  1. Select 1 paid Standard or Premium seat during signup. Check the selected seat count before continuing.

  2. Review the seat type, billing frequency, price, and total charge.

  3. Confirm your purchase to create the workspace.

For the full signup process, see: Sign up for ChatGPT Business.

Manage your seat count

Workspace owners can add paid seats or schedule seat reductions.

Add seats

You can add paid seats as your team grows. Added seats are charged on a prorated basis for the rest of the current billing cycle and become available after successful payment. They remain part of your recurring subscription unless you schedule a reduction.

For instructions, see: Managing billing and seats in ChatGPT Business.

Reduce to a single seat

If your workspace was offered a 1-seat minimum during signup and the option remains available, you can schedule a reduction to 1 paid seat. This also applies if you initially purchased more than 1 seat.

Before reducing your seat count, make sure no more than 1 paid seat is occupied. Removing a member alone does not reduce your paid seat count.

To review the available reduction:

  1. In your Business workspace, go to Workspace settings > Members.

  2. Select Users.

  3. Select Manage seats.

  4. If available, set the paid seat count to 1, then review the change and effective date before confirming.

The reduction takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle. On an annual plan, this means the start of your next annual term. Scheduling a reduction does not reverse current-period charges or automatically issue a refund.

For member and seat-assignment instructions, see: Managing members, seat types, and roles in ChatGPT Business.

FAQ

Why do I still see a 2-seat minimum?

Only some new ChatGPT Business workspaces can start with 1 paid Standard or Premium seat. To check, try lowering the seat count at checkout. If 2 is the lowest number you can select, the 1-seat option isn’t available for that signup. If you already own a Business workspace, check Manage seats to see the minimum that applies to it.

You may also see a 2-seat minimum in the Business overview, signup guide, billing and seats guide, and guide to managing members and seat types. Those guides describe the usual 2-seat minimum for ChatGPT Business and don’t cover the 1-seat option available to some new workspaces.

What happens if I cancel and reactivate?

Review the subscription details and seat requirements shown during reactivation before confirming. For the reactivation steps, see: Managing billing and seats in ChatGPT Business.

Can I keep my personal workspace?

You can keep it separate or choose to merge it into Business. A merge has no undo option that moves Business content back to your personal workspace. Before deciding, see: Migrating your personal workspace to ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.

Where can I get help with a charge or refund?

Contact OpenAI Support to discuss a charge. Refund eligibility depends on the applicable policy and legal rights. For instructions, see: How do I request a refund for my ChatGPT subscription?.
