Overview
If you subscribe to ChatGPT on more than one platform (Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or chatgpt.com), you may end up with multiple active subscriptions and multiple charges. This article explains how to prevent that and what to do if it happens.
Why duplicate subscriptions happen
Your ChatGPT subscription is managed by the platform where you purchased it:
Apple App Store subscriptions are managed by Apple
Google Play Store subscriptions are managed by Google
chatgpt.com subscriptions are managed on chatgpt.com
If you start a new subscription on one platform before canceling the old one on another platform, you can end up paying for more than one subscription at the same time.
Recommended option: subscribe on chatgpt.com
If you use ChatGPT across multiple devices, subscribing on chatgpt.com is often the easiest option because you can manage your subscription from the web instead of through Apple or Google.
Important: If you previously subscribed through Apple or Google, you should cancel that subscription first before starting a new one on chatgpt.com.
Avoiding duplicate subscriptions
To avoid creating a second subscription, you need to find out which platform is currently managing your billing. Start by checking each place where a ChatGPT subscription can exist so you know which plan to keep and which one to cancel, following the steps below:
iOS (Apple App Store)
Open the Settings app on your iPhone
Tap your name
Tap Subscriptions
Look for ChatGPT
Android (Google Play Store)
Open the Google Play Store
Make sure you are signed into the Google account you used to subscribe
Go to Menu > Subscriptions
Look for ChatGPT
ChatGPT Web (chatgpt.com)
Log in to ChatGPT on the web
Go to Settings
Open the Account section (or Billing or Plan management)
Review whether you have an active plan managed on chatgpt.com
If you have an existing subscription on one of the platforms, and want to change it to another platform (for example, moving from from the Apple app store or Google play store to chatgpt.com, you must first cancel your subscription on the same platform where you originally started it. See steps below to cancel:
If you subscribed on iOS (Apple App Store)
If you subscribed through Apple, Apple manages your subscription and you must cancel it in iOS settings:
Open the Settings app on your iPhone
Tap your name
Tap Subscriptions
Select ChatGPT
Tap Cancel Subscription
If you subscribed on Android (Google Play Store)
Open the Google Play Store
Make sure you are signed into the Google account you used to subscribe
Go to Menu > Subscriptions
Select ChatGPT
Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts
Note that uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your Google Play or Apple app store subscription.
If you subscribed on chatgpt.com
Log in to ChatGPT on the web
Click your profile icon and select Settings
Go to the Account tab
Select Manage
Select Cancel subscription
Duplicate subscriptions due to failed payments on iOS
If your Apple renewal fails because of a payment issue, your subscription is not automatically canceled. Your subscription may appear inactive in ChatGPT, but Apple may continue trying to recover it.
If you start a new subscription on chatgpt.com or the Google play store, but later update your Apple payment method in response to the payment issue, Apple may use the new payment method to recover and renew your ChatGPT subscription, which can result in duplicate subscriptions and multiple charges.
To avoid this situation, either:
Update your Apple payment method and allow Apple to recover your subscription without starting a new subscription on a different platform, or,
Cancel your Apple subscription first, even if it looks inactive. After Apple confirms it will not renew, subscribe on chatgpt.com.
What to do if you were charged twice
First, use the steps above per platform to confirm where you have active subscriptions. Decide which subscription you want to continue, and then request refunds from the platform for the duplicate charge.
If you subscribed through the Apple App store, request a refund from Apple.
If you subscribed through Google Play, follow Google’s refund process.
If you subscribed on chatgpt.com, or are not sure where you subscribed, contact support.
