Account switching is currently available on ChatGPT web; it is not yet supported in Codex desktop or the native ChatGPT mobile apps.
Account switching lets you stay signed in to 2 ChatGPT accounts at the same time and switch between them instantly — no logging out required.
This makes it easy to keep your work and personal usage separate while using the same browser or device.
What the account switcher does
With the account switcher, you can:
Be signed into 2 accounts in the same session
Switch between them instantly
Keep chats, memory, history, billing, and workspaces fully separate
Each account remains independent. Switching does not merge or combine them.
How the account switcher works
Stay signed into 2 accounts
You can be logged into:
A personal account (e.g., bobby@gmail.com)
A work account (e.g., bobby@acmecorp.com)
Only one account is active at a time, but switching is immediate.
You can create additional accounts, but the switcher supports a maximum of 2 signed-in accounts per session.
Add an account
To add a second account:
Open the account menu.
Select Add account.
Sign in or create a new account.
You do not need to log out of your current account to add another one.
Creating a second account does not require payment. Your newly created account will start on the Free plan by default.
Switch accounts
Use the account menu to switch accounts. When you switch, all chats, memory, files, and settings will reflect the selected account. Workspaces (if applicable) will be scoped to that account.
Switching is not merging. Switching does not:
Move chats between accounts
Share memory or conversation history
Share files or uploads
Combine billing or subscriptions
Merge workspaces
If you want your work data governed by your organization, make sure you are using your work account before starting a conversation.
Work and Enterprise accounts
If your organization manages your ChatGPT account:
Your administrator may be able to access and manage data tied to that account.
Data created in your managed account is governed by your organization’s policies.
Switching accounts does not change which policies apply.
For more information, see: data access for your managed ChatGPT account. If you’re unsure which account you’re using, check the active account shown in the account menu. If you have questions about your organization-managed account, contact your IT administrator.
An account is what you use to sign in to ChatGPT. A workspace is where your chats, content, and settings live. One account can access multiple workspaces, including a Personal workspace and a company workspace. A Personal workspace under your work email is not the same as a separate account using an email address you personally own.
For personal use, create a separate account with an email address that you personally own and control. Avoid using a work or corporate email address for personal conversations and data.
If your employment ends and your employer removes access to your work email or managed workspace, you will lose access to the affected account or workspace and the personal data stored there. Account switching does not preserve that access or transfer the data to your personal account.
If you merge your Personal workspace into an Enterprise or Business workspace, the Personal workspace is closed after the merge. The merge is permanent: you cannot later separate or restore the original Personal workspace. Some Business invitations let you keep a Personal workspace separate; check the options before proceeding.
Enterprise onboarding with a verified company email may require you to close your Personal workspace by merging it or exporting and deleting its data. Business administrators cannot require you to merge or delete a Personal workspace.
Frequently asked questions
Can I merge 2 accounts via account switching?
No. Account switching allows you to access multiple accounts easily, but it does not merge them.
Can I use this with all plan types?
Account switching can be used with all plan types, but your organization may control whether account switching is available for your managed workspace. If you don’t see the option to add or switch accounts in a managed workspace, check with your workspace administrator.
What happens if my workspace is deactivated?
If a workspace tied to an account is deactivated:
You may see a banner explaining the change.
You may be prompted to sign in with a different account or purchase a new subscription (depending on plan type).
ChatGPT will not automatically switch you to another account.
When should I use a second account?
A separate account is useful if you want:
Clear separation between work and personal chats
Separate conversation history
Different billing or subscription plans
Different workspaces
Different privacy or administrative controls
If you want your work activity to stay under your organization’s governance, use your managed work account for work-related conversations.
