Overview
ChatGPT uses card and device limits as part of its privacy and security protections. If too many subscriptions are associated with the same payment card or device, ChatGPT may block a new subscription purchase.
ChatGPT also limits how many paid accounts you can use on one device. If you see Device limit reached, you can’t use that paid account on this device. You may see the warning when you sign in or be signed out after a later check, even if the purchase went through and the account worked at first.
If you need more usage, check the options available on an account you already use, such as eligible credit purchases or usage resets. If you see the device warning at sign-in, you can also sign in to another permitted account you own. Buying credits or resetting usage won’t clear a card or device restriction.
Device limits apply to ChatGPT Go, ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro 100, ChatGPT Pro 200, and ChatGPT Pro 500 plans. ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace plans do not count toward the limit.
Device limits are separate from the number of accounts signed in at the same time - signing out of an account does not guarantee that another paid account becomes eligible.
Device limits are separate from account switching limits. For more information about switching accounts, see: Using multiple accounts with account switching.
What to do if you see either message
If your purchase is blocked
If checkout says “Too many subscriptions associated with this card or device. We can’t complete this purchase,” the purchase was blocked by a device or card restriction. This is different from a bank decline. Use the options on an existing permitted account, or contact Support using the steps below if you believe the restriction is incorrect.
If you see Device limit reached
Check that the warning shows your account, then choose one of these options:
Use another account. Select Log into another account and sign in with another permitted account you own.
Cancel and request a refund.
For subscriptions billed through ChatGPT or Google Play, choose the cancellation and refund option. We’ll cancel the affected subscriptions and start your refund.
For Apple purchases, cancel your subscription and request your refund directly through Apple.
In case we need further information or action to process the refund, we’ll open a support case for you and email you.
Refunds can take time to reach your payment method.
Use the options on your existing account
If you need more usage for supported features, you may be able to buy credits on your existing account. Check Settings > Usage in ChatGPT or Usage & Billing in the Codex app for the options available to you.
Credit availability depends on your account, plan, region, and the feature you want to use. Credits pay for eligible usage after included limits are reached. They do not unlock models your plan cannot access, combine subscriptions, or transfer usage between accounts.
For details, see: Using credits for flexible usage in ChatGPT.
If you cannot buy credits, check the usage notice for other available options, such as waiting until your usage resets or using an eligible reset already available on your account. Available options depend on your plan and account.
Get help with an unexpected restriction
If you believe the restriction is incorrect, ask Support to review it. If multiple people use the same payment card, the card can reach the checkout limit even when each person uses a different device. A shared household or public device can also reach a limit when people use their own accounts. Tell Support if you share the card or device, and provide only your own account details. If you see the device warning at sign-in, choose the cancellation-and-refund option only if you want to end the affected subscriptions.
To help us review the issue, include:
The warning text or a screenshot, with unrelated personal information removed.
The email address and sign-in method for the account you were using, plus the subscription ID if the warning shows one.
The plan you tried to buy, the app or website you used, and when it happened, including your time zone.
Whether you were charged. If so, include the purchase receipt or order reference and whether you paid on the web, through Apple, or through Google Play.
Do not share passwords, one-time codes, or full payment-card details. For more information, see: Contacting OpenAI Support.
If you already paid and cannot use the subscription
Tell Support if the purchase completed and you were blocked immediately, or if you used the subscription before being signed out. Include the affected account, subscription ID if shown, purchase details, and when access stopped.
Follow the cancellation and refund steps above for the platform that billed you. For ChatGPT or Google Play purchases, the request may affect multiple subscriptions on your account, and paid access ends immediately when cancellation succeeds. Prior usage does not by itself prevent this restriction-specific request. For other refund requests, see: Requesting a subscription refund. The general refund process depends on where you purchased the subscription. If you cannot reopen the device warning or access the affected account, contact Support and explain that. Seeing the warning does not mean a refund has been processed or the subscription canceled.
FAQ
Will canceling a subscription let me buy another one?
Self-service cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current billing period. If you use the cancellation-and-refund option on the device warning for ChatGPT or Google Play purchases, paid access to the affected subscriptions ends immediately when cancellation succeeds. For Apple purchases, confirm when access ends with Apple. Neither route guarantees that another purchase or paid-account sign-in will become available. Subscriptions purchased before these restrictions take effect can continue under the existing-subscription exception; canceling one does not guarantee you can replace it. Contact Support before making changes if you are unsure.
For the normal cancellation process and when access ends, see: Canceling a ChatGPT subscription.
Does a blocked purchase mean my bank declined the payment?
If checkout says too many subscriptions are associated with your card or device, ChatGPT blocked the purchase. That message doesn’t mean your bank declined the payment. If checkout says your card was declined, see Troubleshooting a declined card.
Is this the same as reaching a usage limit?
No. A usage limit affects how much you can use on a subscription you already have. A card or device limit can block a new purchase. The “Device limit reached” warning means you can’t use that paid account on this device. For current plan options, see About ChatGPT Pro tiers.
Does this warning mean someone accessed my account?
A blocked purchase or a device-limit warning alone doesn’t mean someone accessed your account without permission. If you also notice unfamiliar account activity, contact Support and describe what you observed.
