What is ChatGPT Business?

Learn what ChatGPT Business is, how different seat types work, and how pricing, privacy, and admin controls work.

Updated: 14 days ago

Note: As of April 2, 2026, we've updated several features of the ChatGPT Business plan.

  • We're introducing a new seat type: a Codex seat that offers codex-only access, based on flexible pricing.

  • We've reduced the price of subscription-based ChatGPT seats, by USD $5 / month (actual reduction may depend on pricing in your region).

    • If you're a current subscriber, the new, lower price will be reflected in your next monthly or annual bill. We're refunding the (pro-rated) price difference on your current bill, as a credit that can be applied to your next subscription renewal to account for the price change. Read more.

  • We've updated the Codex Rate Card to align with token-based usage pricing. This may result in a difference in what you're charged. Read more about the new rates - note that ChatGPT rates remain unchanged.

Overview

ChatGPT Business is a self-serve plan designed for organizations that want a shared ChatGPT workspace for their teams.

A Business workspace provides:

  • A secure environment for collaboration

  • Generous access to frontier models

  • Centralized billing across users

  • Admin controls for managing users, roles, and access

  • Usage visibility and spend controls

  • Access to Codex and ChatGPT, depending on seat type

ChatGPT Business is built around 2 types of seats: standard ChatGPT seats and Codex seats. Each seat type determines what a user can access and how you are billed for that user.

Standard ChatGPT seats (fixed cost)

Standard ChatGPT seats include access to ChatGPT as well as features such as GPTs, Projects, Apps, Company Knowledge, ChatGPT Agent, Deep Research, as well as Codex. The seats include baseline access, and you can use flexible pricing and purchase workspace credits for usage beyond the included rate limits.

For most countries, pricing (USD) is $25 per user per month if billed monthly and $20 per user per month if billed annually. Note that pricing may vary depending on your country and currency type - see the pricing page for more details. Standard ChatGPT seats include access to ChatGPT and Codex within the Business workspace.

If you purchase ChatGPT Business for standard ChatGPT seats, you must purchase a minimum of 2 standard ChatGPT seats.

Standard ChatGPT seats include access to both ChatGPT and Codex, our agentic coding platform. Review the Codex Rate Card and the ChatGPT Rate Card.

Codex seats (usage-based, no fixed cost)

Codex seats provide access to Codex only – they do not include ChatGPT access. These seats are usage-based seats, with no fixed cost per user per month. There’s no minimum number of Codex seats you need to purchase, but because seats are billed on usage, using Codex requires workspace credits.

If a user on a Codex seat tries to access ChatGPT in the Business workspace, they will be notified that ChatGPT access is not available for their seat type. Upgrading to a standard ChatGPT seat provides access to both Codex and ChatGPT. You can learn more about changing seat types here.

Codex seats are governed by workspace-level admin controls, just like standard ChatGPT seats.

Read more about Codex in our developer docs. Read our FAQ on flexible, credit based pricing for ChatGPT Business, and refer to our Codex Rate Card for information on pricing, and read about credit-based pricing.

Mixing seat types in a workspace

A Business workspace can include only standard ChatGPT seats, only Codex seats, or a mix of both. You can manage seats and change seat types in workspace settings.

Privacy, terms, and data handling

ChatGPT Business adheres to our Business Terms and the privacy policies listed on the Enterprise Privacy page. OpenAI won’t train on your workspace’s data.

ChatGPT Business compared with other plans

ChatGPT Business is a self-serve workspace plan for teams. If you need a larger deployment or more advanced controls, consider ChatGPT Enterprise.

ChatGPT Business is separate from the API platform. A ChatGPT Business subscription does not include API usage - API usage is billed separately. Learn more about the API Platform.

If you need invoice billing, purchase orders, bank transfer, wire, ACH, net terms, split payments, Zero Data Retention, BAAs, or other sales-led options, use a contracted offering instead of self-serve ChatGPT Business.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Business the same as ChatGPT Team?

Yes. ChatGPT Team was renamed to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025. The rename itself did not change the plan, but later pricing and seat options can still change over time.

Can a single workspace include both standard ChatGPT seats and Codex seats?

Yes. A ChatGPT Business workspace can include standard ChatGPT seats, Codex seats, or a mix of both.

Do Codex seats include ChatGPT access in the workspace?

No. Codex seats are for usage-based Codex access. They do not include ChatGPT workspace access.

Does ChatGPT Business still require 2 users?

Standard ChatGPT seat access starts at 2 users. Codex-only workspaces do not require a minimum starting number of Codex seats.

Do I need to update my contract, agreement, or vendor record because of the rename of ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business?

No. Existing contracts and terms remain in effect. OpenAI remains the vendor of record. Update procurement or vendor records only if your internal process requires it.

Can I use the ChatGPT API with this plan?

API usage is separate and billed independently.

Can I create a new ChatGPT Business account after deleting my previous one?

Yes. After 30 days, you can create a new account with the same email if the prior account was fully deleted and not merely deactivated. Deleted accounts cannot be reactivated.
