Enterprise contracts with USD billing

For token-based ChatGPT Enterprise agreements, including ChatGPT for Financial Services, usage is charged in US dollars (USD) at your contracted rates. The credit-based rules below apply to credit-based agreements. Read more about token based billing.

How do credits work in ChatGPT plans?

Credits unlock additional, flexible access to advanced ChatGPT features like Deep Research, Thinking models, Image Generation, Advanced Voice and Codex. These features are available across ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, with varying usage models:

• Business users receive per-seat limits for all advanced features. If a user exceeds their limit and the workspace has purchased credits, they can continue drawing from the shared pool. Purchasing credits is optional and only necessary if a workspace owner wants to unblock users who exceed their usage limits across any seat type.

• Enterprise and Edu workspaces purchase a shared credit pool at the contract level. All users and seat types in the workspace draw from this pool when using advanced features. There are no per-seat usage caps by default - owners/admins can use RBAC to set spend controls by group.

Are credits refundable?

Credits are non-refundable unless required by law or your contract, or an approved exception applies.

For self-serve ChatGPT Business, unused credits may qualify for a refund for a verified billing error, confirmed unauthorized activity, or a confirmed OpenAI service failure or incorrect account restriction. Credits already used can be reviewed only for a verified billing correction or confirmed unauthorized use, subject to applicable law or contract. Contact OpenAI Support if you believe an exception applies.

For Enterprise and Edu, your contract governs credit refund rights. Contact your OpenAI Account team for contract-specific questions.

For confirmed account compromise, we may restore credits as described below.

What happens when I reach my credit or usage limit?

• Business: Users see a banner when their included usage is exhausted. If no credits are available in the workspace pool, the feature is blocked and users can ask a workspace owner to add more. Workspace owners can use automatic recharge to make sure the workspace has sufficient credits.

• Enterprise and Edu: If your workspace uses credit-based billing, the workspace overage limit starts at No limit. When the shared pool runs out, eligible usage can continue and may be billed under your agreement. A workspace owner can set an overage limit. A positive limit caps additional usage. A limit of 0 blocks new requests that use credits after the pool is empty, although requests already in progress may finish. Individual usage limits still apply. Workspace Owners receive email and in-product alerts when thresholds are hit.

How do I buy credits?

• Business: Workspace owners purchase credits via Settings > Billing. Credits are pooled across all users. Read more about managing billing in ChatGPT Business workspaces.

• Enterprise and Edu: Credits are purchased and allocated at the contract level. To increase the workspace’s total shared credit pool, contact your OpenAI Account team. Usage limits only control how the existing pool is used; they do not add credits. Read more.

What happens to billing and credits when we add Enterprise users?

Workspace owners and admins can generally invite users from Workspace settings, and adding users does not immediately increase the workspace’s shared credit pool. For standard seat-bundled Enterprise contracts that use credit-based billing, qualifying added seats are generally reconciled through quarterly true-ups, typically every 3 months from the workspace’s subscription or service-term start date, not calendar quarters. If applicable, corresponding pooled credits are added after the true-up is processed. Exact timing, thresholds, billing, and credit terms depend on the Order Form and pricing model. How can I check my credit balance and usage?

Workspace Owners across Business, Enterprise, and Edu plan types can view their remaining credits and download usage reports by going to Workspace settings > Billing.

Business: A purchase shows the credits your workspace bought. A usage report shows activity during the period you selected. Compare the same workspace, dates and time zone. Included seat usage can cover some activity before the workspace spends purchased credits.

Do credits expire or rollover?

• Business: Credits are valid for 12 months after purchase.

• Enterprise and Edu: Credit allocation and expiration are defined in your Order Form. If you're unsure of your terms, contact your account team.

Can I use credits for any ChatGPT feature?

Credits only apply to advanced models and features. You do not need credits to use core ChatGPT models and features such as search, file upload, and canvas.

Can I configure alerts or limits for credit usage?

• Business: Workspace owners can configure credit usage alerts in Workspace settings > Billing > Usage Alerts.

• Enterprise and Edu: Workspace owners can configure usage alerts and overage limits in Workspace settings > Billing. Overage limits control additional usage beyond your workspace’s committed credits. Setting the overage limit to 0 blocks new requests that use credits once your committed credit pool is exhausted. This does not guarantee that your credit balance stays at or above zero in real time: requests already in progress may finish and settle afterward, leaving a small negative balance.

What happens if credits are used due to a compromised account?

If an account in your workspace is compromised and credits are spent without authorization, contact OpenAI support. We will investigate the incident, restore lost credits if misuse is confirmed, and assist with password resets and security controls. We also recommend that you take immediate steps to secure the account by following the steps outlined here.

Does ChatGPT charge credits when it auto-routes to a mini model?

If a Chat message is automatically routed to a mini model under credit-based pricing, that message uses 0 credits.
