For self-serve ChatGPT and/or API Platform customers, you can delete or remove your payment method on file via the appropriate billing settings page. Your account must be fully verified before you can add, update, or delete payment methods.
Troubleshooting / FAQ
Why the "Remove/Delete payment method" button may be unavailable
Active subscription: if you have an active or recurring subscription, the system may prevent removing the payment method until the subscription is canceled or replaced.
Scheduled cancellation: if you've scheduled cancellation, the payment method may remain until the cancellation takes effect.
Past-due invoice or recent payment failure: outstanding charges can block removal until the invoice is paid or the payment issue is resolved.
If you receive past-due or payment-failure emails
Resolve the outstanding invoice (pay the invoice or update your payment method) using your billing settings, or follow the instructions in the email. If you can’t resolve the charge, contact Billing Support for help.
What happens after removal
Removing a payment method does not delete billing history or retroactively remove charges.
If you remove the only valid payment method while you have active paid services (including API usage), billing attempts may fail and paid services can be suspended or restricted. To avoid interruption, add a replacement payment method before removing the existing one.
Business access edge cases
Deactivated workspaces or lack of admin/owner access can prevent managing payment methods; contact your workspace owner or admin to update billing.
If ownership is transferring, coordinate billing changes with the new owner to ensure uninterrupted service.
Billing records and suspected fraud
Billing records are retained for accounting and support purposes; removing a payment method does not erase past invoices.
If you suspect fraud or unauthorized charges, contact Support via the Help Center as soon as possible and include relevant transaction details so the team can investigate.
ChatGPT Plus / Pro
Navigate to your Settings > Account page and click on Payment > Manage:

Under Payment Method, you can add or remove existing payment methods.

ChatGPT Business
From your workspace settings, navigate to the Billing > Plan tab and click on Manage plan > Payment method.
