Overview
If you’re trying to subscribe to ChatGPT on iOS or Android and see a message saying your subscription or purchase is associated with another ChatGPT account, it usually means your App Store or Play Store account (Apple ID or Google Play account) is already linked to a different ChatGPT account.
This can be confusing—especially if you’re signing in with what feels like the “right” account—so below we explain what’s happening and how to resolve it.
Common error messages you may see
You might see a message like:
“This subscription is associated with another OpenAI account. Please login with that account to access it, or visit help.openai.com for support.”
These messages indicate that your app store account is already linked to a different ChatGPT account.
What to do if you see this message
Sign in to the original ChatGPT account
The email address on your Apple or Google Play account may differ from the email on your ChatGPT account. The email where you receive a receipt may not identify the ChatGPT account associated with the subscription. If your subscription works on another device, check the ChatGPT account email on that device before signing out. For help identifying your account and sign-in method, see: Troubleshooting ChatGPT sign-in.
If you already have an active subscription:
Sign out of ChatGPT.
Sign back in using the same ChatGPT account that originally made the purchase.
Your subscription should appear once you’re signed in to the correct account.
Restore an Apple App Store purchase
If you subscribed through the Apple App Store, sign in to the ChatGPT account you used when you subscribed. The purchase is linked to both that account and your Apple Account.
Open Settings in the ChatGPT iOS app.
Select Account.
Select Restore purchases.
If restoring shows the other-account error, follow the account checks above. If you cannot access the original account, or have already restored your purchase and still see Free, contact Support. Include the account emails and sign-in methods you tried, any error message, and the steps already completed.
The Apple restore option applies to Apple App Store purchases. If you subscribed on the web, manage your subscription at chatgpt.com.
Avoid re‑purchasing on a different account
Trying to purchase again while signed into another ChatGPT account can lead to confusion or duplicate charges. If you want to use ChatGPT under a different account, you’ll need to manage the subscription separately, from your Google Play or Apple App Store account.

After you confirm in Apple or Google Play subscription settings that your previous subscription has ended and will not renew, sign in to the ChatGPT account you want to use on chatgpt.com. If web checkout is available for your account, you can start a new paid subscription there. Use that same account in the mobile app. A web purchase does not transfer the previous subscription or change which ChatGPT account your app store account is linked to.
Request a refund if you were charged unexpectedly
If you believe you were charged incorrectly:
Apple App Store purchases: Request a refund directly through Apple.
Google Play purchases: Request a refund through OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account associated with the charge.

Frequently asked questions
How do mobile subscriptions work?
When you purchase a ChatGPT subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play:
The subscription is tied to both your app store account (Apple ID or Google Play account), and the ChatGPT account you were signed into at the time of purchase
An existing mobile subscription can’t be transferred to a different ChatGPT account
Because of this, if you later sign in to ChatGPT with another account and try to subscribe again, you may see an error—even though you’re using the same phone or app store account.
Can I transfer my subscription to another ChatGPT account?
No. Mobile subscriptions can’t be transferred between ChatGPT accounts.
Can I share one mobile subscription across multiple ChatGPT accounts?
No. Each mobile subscription is tied to a single ChatGPT account.
Can I access my subscription on another device?
Yes. Sign in with the same ChatGPT account that made the original purchase. The account must be active and not deleted.
If your subscription works on another device, check the ChatGPT account email on that device before signing out. On the web, open Settings > Account. Use that account and its sign-in method on the other device. The email where you receive receipts may differ from your ChatGPT account email. For help identifying your account, see Troubleshooting ChatGPT sign-in.
Changing devices does not change who manages your subscription. Manage an Apple App Store purchase through Apple, a Google Play purchase through Google Play, or a web purchase through ChatGPT on the web. See Canceling your ChatGPT subscription for the platform-specific steps.
What if I created a new ChatGPT account after subscribing?
You’ll need to sign back into the original ChatGPT account that made the purchase to access your subscription.
Will uninstalling or reinstalling the app fix this?
No. Reinstalling the app won’t change which ChatGPT account your subscription is linked to.
I see an error but the charge still went through—what should I do?
Sign in to the original ChatGPT account first. If the subscription doesn’t appear there, request a refund through the applicable platform where you attempted the subscription: How do I request a refund for my ChatGPT subscription?
