Overview

An OpenAI ChatGPT gift card is a US dollar-denominated, non-reloadable stored-value card, available for purchase through participating authorized retailers. Currently, gift cards are available for digital purchase at select retailers. You can buy a gift card, send it to friends and family, and redeem it on ChatGPT web to add its value to the OpenAI wallet balance associated with your account. Gift cards are currently available only in the US, for use in US-based ChatGPT accounts, with currency denominated in USD.

Once redeemed, a gift card balance applies to your account, and can be used for purchasing OpenAI subscriptions, renewals and credits on ChatGPT web.

OpenAI ChatGPT gift cards are separate from Gifting Credits, promotional codes, free-trial invitations and API prepaid billing. Each of those products has different eligibility and refund rules.

Availability & Restrictions

OpenAI gift cards are available for purchase and redemption only in the United States. You must be in the United States and use an account billed in US dollars to redeem a gift card. If you are traveling outside the United States, you may need to return before you can redeem it.

Do not buy a US gift card for someone who cannot meet these location and billing requirements. Sending a digital or physical card to another country does not make it eligible there.

Before redeeming, check that you are signed in to the account and workspace where you want to add the balance. Once redeemed, the value cannot be moved to a different account.

OpenAI gift cards can be used for redemption in the following plans:

• ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro

• ChatGPT Business (owners, or personal workspace only)

Some complimentary subscriptions may be ineligible even when the plan name appears supported.

You can use the redeemed balance for subscription purchases, upgrades, and credit purchases on ChatGPT web only - not for transactions on the Apple App store or the Android Play store. Before redeeming, ensure that you carefully review the redemption account, and the redemption use case.

Once redeemed, gift card balances cannot be refunded back to the gift card, or an alternate method of payment.

Buy a gift card

You can currently buy digital OpenAI gift cards at select retailers. Availability, digital and physical card distribution, timing, and denominations may vary by retailer.

Unless otherwise specified at purchase, gift cards may be purchased in amounts from $15 to $250. Read the terms and conditions on the gift card before purchasing.

If you travel after redeeming a card, your USD balance does not pay for purchases billed in another currency. Review the amount due before paying, even if your account still shows a balance.

Redeem a gift card

In order to use your Gift Card to purchase goods and services from OpenAI, you must first redeem the Gift Card into your OpenAI Account. Note that the full value of the Gift Card will be redeemed to your OpenAI Account - you cannot redeem partial amounts.

1. Visit chatgpt.com/redeem on the web.

2. Sign in to the ChatGPT account where you want to add the balance. Make sure that you are in the right account and workspace for redemption, before proceeding.

   1. If you do not have a ChatGPT account, sign up for one.

3. Enter the gift card PIN.

4. Confirm the redemption, then open Settings > Billing to view your personal account balance. For a Business workspace, owners can view the balance in Workspace settings > Billing.

Balances are stored in your wallet. You can review transactions, view your balance, and redeem additional gift cards in your wallet. Read more.

Check the account before redeeming. Once redeemed the value cannot be moved to a different account.

Use your redeemed balance

You can use gift card balances for directly billed subscription purchases, upgrades, and renewals, and credit purchases on ChatGPT web. Purchases made in the iOS or Android app, such as subscriptions purchases or upgrades through the Apple app store or the Android play store, are not eligible for gift card use.

To use your redeemed balance, choose an eligible subscription, upgrade, or credit purchase on ChatGPT web. Your balance is automatically applied up to the amount needed for an eligible purchase. Any unused funds remain in your account balance for future eligible purchases. Your USD balance does not pay for purchases billed in another currency.

Note that you cannot choose how much of the gift card balance you can use for a specific purchase: we first use any available gift card balance, and then bill any overages to other methods of payment (e.g., your credit card).

Trials and promotions may still require a payment method, even if you have a gift card balance. If you are using gift card balances for subscription renewals, make sure you have enough balance or another payment method to cover the charge; otherwise, your subscription may not renew.

Note that while you can use the balance for one-time ChatGPT Work, or Codex usage-credit purchases, adding gift-card funds does not itself buy usage credits.

Credit auto-reload is not a way to reload your gift card - however, credit auto-reload will use any available wallet balance prior to charging your payment method on file.

Check the balance applied and the remaining amount due before confirming each purchase.

Business workspaces

Only workspace owners can redeem a card into the workspace balance - admins and members cannot perform a redemption. Owners must first create a workspace prior to redeeming a gift card into the workspace. Note that ChatGPT Personal account funds do not pay for the initial subscription that creates a new Business workspace, or transfer into its balance. Redemption Limits

You may redeem multiple eligible gift cards subject to applicable account-balance and safety limits. A redemption may fail if it would exceed an account-balance or daily loading limit. Spending funds does not reset the amount you can load from gift cards that day. Gift-card purchase limits and account loading limits are separate.

If you receive a temporary redemption error, wait and try again later.

Troubleshooting

Common errors include:

• Using the gift card balance to pay for a subscription on the Apple App store or the Google Play store.

• An incorrectly entered PIN, or an invalid, inactive, or suspended card.

• A card that has already been redeemed.

• Signing in to the wrong account or selecting an ineligible account or workspace.

• Being outside the United States or using a non-USD account.

• Reaching the applicable account-balance limit.

• A temporary redemption or service issue.

Check your account, country, billing currency, and PIN. If the issue continues, contact OpenAI Support. Never post a full gift card PIN in a public forum.

FAQ

How do I check which account will receive my gift card balance?
Before entering the PIN, sign in using the email address for the account you want to fund. If you're unsure which login is active, sign out and sign back in with that account.

If you’re in a Business workspace, you have to be the owner of that workspace to redeem the gift card, or switch workspaces to your Personal workspace to redeem.

Once redeemed, the balance cannot be moved to a different account.

Can I redeem a gift card if I have a complimentary subscription?
Some complimentary subscriptions may be ineligible, even if the plan name appears in the supported list. If you can't redeem a card and believe your account is eligible, contact OpenAI Support for help.

Does redeeming a gift card start a paid subscription?
No. Redeeming a gift card adds funds to your account; it doesn't start a subscription or change your plan. To buy a paid plan, sign in to the same account on ChatGPT web and choose an eligible subscription. Review the balance applied and any remaining amount due before confirming the purchase.

How can I use my gift card balance if Apple or Google bills my subscription?
Gift card balances can't pay for subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. To switch to ChatGPT web, cancel your existing subscription through the store where you bought it, then wait until that subscription has ended before starting an eligible web subscription with the same ChatGPT account. Why am I asked for a payment method when my balance covers the purchase?
Some eligible subscription checkouts let you continue without adding a payment method when your balance covers the full total. This option isn't available for every checkout. Trials and promotions may still require a payment method, even when you have enough balance. Follow the options shown for your purchase.

What happens if my gift card balance covers only part of a purchase?
You need another payment method for the remainder. For example, if the final total is $30 and $10 of gift card balance is applied, the remaining $20 is paid with your secondary payment method. Review the final total, including any tax, and the balance applied before confirming.

Can I save my gift card balance for a later purchase or renewal?
You can redeem your gift card and apply it to a future purchase or billing. Once it is applied to a payment, you cannot choose how much gift card balance to use for an eligible purchase or set it aside by paying the full amount another way. Available balance is used first, and any remainder is charged to another payment method. Check your remaining balance before a future renewal or purchase.

How do I check whether my balance will cover my next renewal?
Before renewal, open Settings > Billing in the account that holds your subscription. Review your subscription details, available balance, and payment methods. Make sure your balance can cover the renewal charge or that another payment method can cover the remainder. Without enough funds or another payment method, your subscription may not renew.

Can I use my USD gift card balance while traveling?
Your USD balance does not pay for purchases billed in another currency. For example, if a purchase is billed in euros, your USD balance does not reduce that charge, even if funds remain in your account. Check the currency and amount due before paying.

Where can I see gift card and balance transactions?
In your personal account, open Settings > Billing and review Transaction history, if available. Select View all when it appears to open the full list. Gift card identifies a successful gift card redemption, while Adjustment can indicate another change to your balance. A Business workspace owner can review the workspace's records separately in Workspace settings > Billing.

How can I check whether my gift card redemption worked?
Sign in to the same account you used to redeem the card. Open Settings > Billing and review Wallet balance and Transaction history, if available. A Gift card transaction records a successful redemption. If the balance is loading or unavailable, that alone does not mean redemption failed. Refresh the page. If the result is still unclear, contact OpenAI Support.

I suspect someone else redeemed my gift card, what do I do?
If you suspect someone else used your gift card, contact OpenAI Support. Include your account email, the gift card's serial number, the error message, and when it happened, including your time zone. Note that the serial number is different from the redemption PIN.

Can I use the gift card balance for an existing subscription?
An eligible redeemed balance may apply to future ChatGPT web subscription charges, including eligible upgrades and renewals. A saved payment method is needed when your balance does not cover the charge or when the checkout requires one. Redeeming a gift card does not change an Apple- or Google-managed subscription.

Can I get my gift card balance refunded to the gift card, or another type of payment?
Redeemed gift card balances cannot be refunded back to the gift card, converted to cash, or refunded to another method of payment. Once redeemed, the balance is made available to your account for ChatGPT subscription, renewal, upgrade, and credit purchases only.

What happens if a gift-card-funded purchase is refunded?
If your gift card balance was used for a ChatGPT purchase that is otherwise eligible for refund, the amount of gift card funds used during that purchase will be returned to the associated OpenAI wallet account balance. It is not returned to the gift card itself, the original payment method used to purchase the gift card, or converted into cash. Refunds are governed by OpenAI’s terms of use.

For example, if you paid for a ChatGPT subscription by using $15 from your wallet balance and $20 using your credit card, we will refund the $15 back to your wallet balance while refunding the rest to your other payment method.

Whom do I contact about delivery, activation or refunds for unused gift cards?
For questions about buying, delivery, activation, or refunds for unused gift cards, contact the retailer. For help redeeming a card in ChatGPT or using an already-redeemed balance, contact OpenAI Support.

What should I do if the gift card email hasn't arrived?
Check the order details and delivery information from the retailer. If the digital gift card still hasn't arrived, contact that retailer for help before buying another card.

Can I split a gift card between accounts?
No. The full value of a gift card is redeemed to one account. For example, you can't redeem $25 from a $50 card to your account and give the other $25 to someone else. Once redeemed, the balance cannot be shared or transferred to another account.

Can I transfer or withdraw the balance?
No. Redeemed gift-card balances cannot be transferred to another account, withdrawn or exchanged for cash.

Do gift cards expire?
Your gift card does not expire.
